20th Century Studios’ newest adventure-comedy Free Guy has an all-star cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi, and is directed by Shawn Levy. Here we are breaking down how to do a Costume or Cosplay of Ryan Reynold’s Free Guy.
Free Guy opens in U.S. theaters on August 13, 2021.
Free Guy
Guy is a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game. He then decides to become the hero of his own story.
Guy, played by Ryan Reynolds, is a creature of habit. He has the same daily routine and has never done or accomplished anything extraordinary. Outgoing and perpetually cheerful, but a tad naïve. Guy’s signature looks include a light blue shirt and khaki pants. Those looks have some variation to them. Reynolds credits his wife, actress Blake Lively for the inspiration.
“I was looking to find a way to make Guy look and feel very real and grounded within his world, but also iconic at the same time, which is a tough thing to do,” Reynolds explains. “We had him changing his outfit every day like everyone else in every other movie, and then it was Blake who said we should think about a Halloween costume. So I started thinking about Guy through the lens of trick-or-treaters and Halloween and people dressing up and asked myself, ‘What is something that everyone would just immediately recognize?’ and the blue shirt and khaki pants sort of stuck.”
Reynolds continues, “From then on we stopped calling him Guy and started referring to him as the blue shirt guy, which is even more of a generic thing to call somebody who doesn’t have an inner world or identity or anything, which spoke to his journey as well.”
How to do a Bank Teller Free Guy Costume or Cosplay
Guy’s (Ryan Reynolds) bank teller look consists of a light blue button-down short-sleeved shirt with a chest pocket and beige-colored khaki pants. The shirt has white buttons and one chest pocket. Above the chest pocket, Guy is wearing his bank teller name badge. The name badge is very simple, it is a solid blue rectangle name badge with white lettering that says “Guy”. He has a wheat-colored tie with dark blue, light blue, and white stripes. The tie is being held to the shirt with a dull-colored gold tie clip.
Some extra accessories you could add are the belt and the glasses. One important distinction to point out is the fact that he wears a series of different glasses throughout the film. The belt is a woven belt with a square buckle. The buckle appears to be a silver color. The belt has one brown belt loop and a brown tip at the edge.
Finding these items online
Finding the screen-accurate items may be difficult. Many times costume designers buy items like this in bulk from ordinary retail shops (they need plenty for filming and for stunt doubles) or they have items custom-made. Costume designer Marlene Stewart has not, as far as we know, revealed the details of how to get these items. We have compiled a list of items that we think will work well for costumes and cosplays. Please note that Temple of Geek does earn a commission on some (not all) of these items.
