The Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss actors joined Vivienne Medrano, the creator of the universe, on a chaotic and insightful panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The cast offered insight into the future of their characters and shared their excitement for what’s coming next with their respective series.
Erika Henningsen and Amir Talai, the voices of Charlie Morningstar and Alastor in Hazbin Hotel, discuss their love for these characters and how that has evolved.
San Diego Comic-Con Interview with Hazbin Hotel Stars Erika Henningsen and Amir Talai
Erika Henningsen and Amir Talai sat down with journalists after the panel for an in-depth discussion about the franchise and the love for their characters.
Bringing Alastor and Charlie to Life in the Helluverse
During the interviews, Amir and Erkia talk about their favorite aspects of Alastor and Charlie.
Amir says, “The aspect of my character I like bringing out the most is that he’s a sassy b—h. That’s really fun to do. I relate to it.” Erika chimes in, agreeing with this sentiment. She says, “You’re a sassy b—h on the inside. He’s like a warm piece of carnal with a sassy b—h center.”
Continuing with that idea of Alastor being sassy, Amir explains, “I also find that it’s very surprising whenever he does that, and it often sort of like comes out of left field a little bit. So I love when the writers give me those moments.”
Erika appreciates it when Charlie has dramatic moments. It breaks up the high-energy speed talking and optimism that, while a core part of Charlie’s character, can be exhausting as an actor.
I really like, I just like love when I get like an actual like dramatic scene. I feel like a lot of the Charlie stuff is like pretty asthmatic. It’s just like a lot of speed talking and I like really feel like I’m about to pass out sometimes. And so when I get a dramatic scene, it’s not just like a nice, just like a break sometimes from the high energy. But also, like what I really want to let out is like I’ve always pitched to Viv.
I’m like, I don’t know where it’s gonna happen, but at a certain point, as with any person who is optimist forward, like that’s gotta go. Not even go because she’s gonna lose it, but like you cannot keep that up sometimes in the face of the world. And like I always akin it to like the moment in Wicked where she sings ‘No Good Deed.’ And I’m like, I want that moment for Charlie. I think it’s coming. I don’t know when, but I just like know Viv has such a clear vision of this character like becoming an adult. And I’m like, I want that dark underbelly of reckoning that like every child, young person goes through, and they’re like, oh s–t, the world is like a scary place. Doesn’t mean we lose something, but you kind of have to like reckon with that awareness. That’s what I want.

Feelings Walking into Episode One are Very Different from Now
As actors, Erika and Amir talk about how that they do not receive all the information about their characters when they audition or get the role. From the get-go, neither of them had any preconceived thoughts or feelings about Charlie or Alastor. However, now that they are heading into new seasons, both have a deeper understanding of the plot and their place in the story.
Erika says:
We didn’t get all the info. Like, all we had was episode one. So it’s like my thoughts. No thoughts at the beginning. I just walked in and did it. But now, my feelings about the show and the character have developed because we know more information.
She goes on to explain that there are moments where she would make some changes if she had the chance.
I’d go back and do many things different. Not even like… if I watch the episode, I’ll be like, oh, no, that’s a good choice. But like, you know what I would do different. The first six minutes of series… of season one where she’s doing the monologue. I would do that entire thing over. You can hear it’s not the way I talk. I don’t really like… there’s no… it’s just weird. It’s just like low energy.
Amir says:
I mean, I understand him more deeply, but I don’t think I don’t think that that would change how I would have done anything in season one. I think that… I think, this might be just me, but I think a lot of actors overestimate how deeply they need to understand the character in order to play it. I think that as long as you make sort of a strong choice, the creator, who has the deepest understanding and a deeper understanding that you’ll ever have, will get the right take that they need and use that take.
