After the panel, Brandon Rogers and Richard Horvitz sat down with journalists to discuss Helluva Boss. The series follows the employees of I.M.P., a company based in Hell, and their antics and misadventures.

The Collaborative Process of Voice Acting, Writing, and Directing

Not only does Brandon Rogers perform as Blitzo, but he also co-writes with Vivienne. Bringing his character to life from the page felt like a natural process. There were a few discoveries made along the way, such as learning how tiring voice acting can be.

Brandon says:

It really kind of felt like a film gig. It didn’t feel like this whole new thing. It just felt like, well, because also when we did the pilot, we were on camera. So there was a sense of like performing. It did not feel as, I don’t know, I don’t know. I didn’t feel as much as I learned… There’s new things about voice acting that you learn that you don’t see on screen acting.

Like, I didn’t realize it was going to be so tiring. You know, a day on like a movie, like a screen set is you… it’s 12 hours, you know, and in a booth we’re there for four hours tops. And I remember on season one, I was like, no, let’s go for eight hours. I can do an eight-hour session. And Richard’s like, by hour two, you’re feeling like already [exhausted]. Because you don’t take breaks. I mean, it’s not like you’re not waiting for people to set up lights or cameras or anything. So it’s just… you’re only acting during that time. And it’s, yeah, you get tired.

Richard Horvitz adds that voice acting is very different from on-camera work.

He says:

My friend Billy West had the most, like, the most graphic and articulate expression of what it is that we do. And it was: our job is to create a world in our imagination and then throw it up in technicolor on the microphone. It’s pretty graphic, but it’s true because if we don’t see it in here, then it doesn’t get captured by the mic. And if it’s not captured by the mic, then the storyboardists and the animators aren’t going to have what they need to make the whole scene cohesive. So it’s exhausting.

Richard serves as a voice director as well as the voice of Moxxie. The challenge in directing is creating cohesiveness through the story when working with actors who are spread out across the country.

Directing wise, for me, you know, we like… we were recording like, the whole season all at once. So in a typical record, we would do an episode a week with everybody because half our cast is in New York, half our cast is here [in Los Angeles]. We’re trying to get everybody when they’re available. So I might record Brandon in episode one and in episode four and episode five that day. So it’s really important for me that we have a cohesiveness and story, but we might jump ahead to something that we haven’t even recorded yet in an episode. So that is not taxing, but challenging, challenging.

But I think it has it has translated well from the page, but we’re also not always married to the page. Like, Brandon is a great improviser, so he might say, can we try this and we’ll do something. It’s like a very collaborative process.
