The Daily Discipline: Why Reading Aloud is “The Acting”
In a recent interview with Temple of Geek, Tara Platt and Yuri Lowenthal emphasize that the most critical, yet often overlooked, practice for an aspiring voice actor is a simple daily habit: reading aloud every day.
While many focus on vocal exercises or building a home studio, Lowenthal argues that this simple routine is the key to mastering the unique technical challenge of voice acting. It directly addresses the core skill needed for professional work. Which is the ability to read a script for the first time and instantly perform.
Yuri Lowenthal: I think you have to fall in love with it. You gotta and explore acting however you can. You’ve gotta love it for it to get you through, because you’re not gonna get paid for most auditions and you’re not going to book it most of the time. Something that I know you [Tara Platt] stress a lot is reading aloud. So much of what we do is showing up on a job, and very often they don’t send you the script in advance. You better be good at picking up a thing that you’re reading for the first time and immediately starting to make choices. Immediately starting to read for comprehension, and immediately beginning to the first time you read it out loud, bring it to life.
Tara Platt: Being able to read for comprehension and make choices simultaneously, that’s the work. Often, the first take, which is your first time reading those words ever in that order, is the take that gets used. If you sound like you’re reading, it’s never gonna fly.
Yuri Lowenthal: Luckily, reading out loud is something that’s free that you can do every day. Read out loud just three to five minutes a day.
Tara Platt: The best benefit is that you get smarter as a human being because reading is one of the best ways to make your brain bigger.
Simultaneous Comprehension and Performance
Reading aloud daily trains the brain to bridge this gap. It prepares the actor to:
- Read for Comprehension: Quickly understand the context, emotion, and objective of the scene or copy.
- Make Immediate Choices: Immediately apply vocal technique and acting decisions (“bringing it to life”) without the need for extensive rehearsal.
This minimal, consistent exercise is designed to build the muscle memory required to pick up a script and analyze text confidently. Helping you master the skill of jumping into character. As well as prepare for the rigors and spontaneity of a professional voice-over session.
