Whitney Moore is bringing the heart, humor, and chaos to “Critical Role Campaign 4.” Moore’s character Tyranny is a demon in the world of Aramán. A world where the Gods have been killed, but power and religion still grasp for control. Tyranny is tied to Wiccander Halovar, an important face of the Candescent Creed religion run by House Halovar. This relationship was established before the beginning of the campaign, pairing Moore and Sam Riegel going into the premiere.
Throughout the first three episodes, Riegel and Moore play off each other masterfully, weaving between comedy and tragedy. While much remains a mystery, what is clear is the deep care and connection they have. Riegel and Moore infuse the relationship with depth and layers of emotion while attempting to one-up each other in who will take the biggest chaotic swing of comedy.
In an exclusive interview with Temple of Geek, Moore discussed her dynamic with Sam Riegel. She revealed how Riegel surprised her after the first episode, where Tyranny was the more chaotic of the two. Moore also teased what fans can expect from the dynamic duo going forward.
“And Now It’s Just A Race To The Bottom” For Whitney Moore & Sam Riegel
Whitney Moore:
“My ass thought, I’m gonna make Sam be the voice of reason because he’s always the troll. He’s always the one that’s doing crazy sh-t and throwing a grenade into the situation. And I was like, I’m gonna make him do this. And now it’s just a race to the bottom. Now it’s who can get there first. But I really love that as a dynamic because it means we get to take turns. And I think that, above table, Sam and I love to sort of play with both dynamics. But also, as the characters, where Wick and Tyranny kind of have to take turns being the responsible one, is really juicy to me.”
In the first episode Moore’s Tyranny is the agent of chaos making life harder for Riegel’s character Wick. However, in the second episode he flips the script, reclaiming his chaotic place in the group. This oscillating dynamic of two chaotic characters having to step up to take care of one another creates a new layer in the relationship between Wick and Tyranny. It also brings a hilarious element to the chemistry between Moore and Riegel as they play off each other.
Sam Riegel Has Been Whitney Moore’s Rock During Critical Role Campaign 4

The thirteen characters have interconnected, tangled relationships. Everyone is connected to Thjazi Fang in some capacity, but many have ties to each other as well. For some they were allies during the Falcon Rebellion. Others have friendships built through professional settings. Familial ties are interwoven throughout, as are more antagonistic dynamics.
In Temple of Geek’s first interview with Moore, she teased the importance of relationships to her play style. However, the only strong established relationship Tyranny has is with Wick, played by Riegel. Tyranny is known by others and has interacted with many of the other characters, but the relationships will largely be built out throughout the campaign. Moore shared how they determined the relationships going into Campaign 4 and teased how seeds have already been planted for the future.
Whitney Moore:
“We played around with a couple dynamics before Sam and I were like, “It’s you and me, dude.” I love the idea that Bolaire has seen me only very drunk at a party. I love when a reputation precedes a person. I think that that’s just so fun. Sam, in so many ways, has been my rock in this new adventure, just having that dynamic built in. And the rest, I’m like, let’s figure it out together. Let’s figure out who we are to each other.
Especially with the nature of the changing tables, I feel like it’s going to be really fun to see. Already, Alex Ward, who’s a very, very good friend of mine, has said one sentence to Tyranny: “You’re not welcome here.” And I’m like, great, that can inform 100 million more hours of relationship forming. So, it’s fun to see it all kind of hold together.”
The relationship between Tyranny and Wick will undoubtedly continue to grow and evolve as more is revealed and they experience the reality of Aramán. The Soldiers Table that they are a part of adds an exciting element as well, with the pair being unlikely additions to this adventure. How the relationships between this party change will bring out new aspects of each character, but the core of Tyranny and her motivation seems intrinsically tied to Wick. Moore’s excitement to play with, and off of, Riegel opens the door to exciting possibilities for Tyranny and her evolution.
“Critical Role Campaign 4” returns November 6. The first four episodes are available now on Beacon. The first three episodes are available on Critical Role’s YouTube, with episode four available on Monday, October 27.
