Mighty Nein

Critical Role Reveals Mighty Nein Release Date, Guest Stars, Sneak Peeks, And More At SDCC Panel

Critical Role kicked off their animation panel with some mighty big announcements about the “Mighty Nein.” This included insight into how this show is different from “The Legend of Vox Machina.” As well as two sneak peeks, character art, and an impressive roster of guest stars. Travis Willingham broke down how “Mighty Nein” is larger than “The Legend of Vox Machina.”

Notably, where each episode of “The Legend of Vox Machina” is about half an hour, “Mighty Nein” episodes will be roughly an hour. However, this is not the only reason Willingham used the descriptor “larger.” “Mighty Nein” will explore a whole new part of Exandria. The series will take place on the continent of Wildemount, which includes the Kryn Dynasty, the Dwendalian Empire, and the Menagerie Coast. Willingham also teased new magic in play, including a type created by Matt Mercer.

These characters are not the typical fantasy heroes in the way that Vox Machina often is. While Vox Machina are a bit rough around the edges, they have grown into the saviors of Exandria. That’s not the Mighty Nein. Sam Riegel describes the Mighty Nein as “loners, outcasts, and criminals.” Willingham teased that the Mighty Nein themselves often don’t know if they are the good guys or bad guys.

First Look At Mighty Nein

That is evident in this sneak peek where six of the characters are being questioned about an incident they may have been involved in. Fjord, Beau, Jester, Nott, Caleb, and Mollymauk are less than cooperative and vary in levels of antagonism towards those questioning them. The way each character treats this interrogation is the perfect insight into who they are early on in their adventures.

Willingham shared that feedback about “The Legend of Vox Machina” feeling rushed was taken to heart. This is in part why they decided to take the time to bring the Mighty Nein together as an adventuring party slowly. This allows them to flesh out the characters individually before they become the Mighty Nein. This approach also gave them the opportunity to weave some of the characters backstories into the larger arcs.

More Essek & Political Intrigue

In Campaign Two the players famously veered off the course Matt Mercer had initially anticipated. The conflict between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty did come into play. However, it wasn’t the focal point in the way he expected. “Mighty Nein” will dive further into this storyline with political intrigue at the heart of it. Mercer excitedly explained that many of these stories that had played out only in his mind will finally be on screen with new perspectives explored.

One of Mercer’s NPCs, Essek Thelyss, became a favorite of the players and fans alike. It seems he will be introduced into the Mighty Nein’s story much earlier than in the campaign. While Mercer is excited to not be voicing a villain this time, there is a darker side to Essek that will be explored. His role in the conflict between the Kryn Dynasty and Dwendalian Empire will be a key part of his story even beyond how it relates to the Mighty Nein.

The panel also included another sneak peek that was exclusive to those attending the panel. The clip featured Volstrucker causing trouble in the Kryn Dynasty with an important artifact. The Volstrucker are dangerous mage assassins with ties to Liam O’Brien’s character, Caleb’s past, and the Dwendalian Empire. Riegel hinted at Caleb’s arc with themes of moving past mistakes and not allowing the past to define you.

New Mighty Nein Character Art

The panel also included character art for the titular heroes, including Yasha, who was not featured in the sneak peek clip. A number of exciting guest stars were also announced for the series, including Mark Strong, Anika Noni Rose, Tim McGraw, Alan Cumming, Jonathan Frakes, Ming-Na Wen, Auli’i Cravalho, Rahul Kohli, and Robbie Daymond.

“Mighty Nein” will not only delve deeper into the characters but also explore more intricate and morally dubious stories. “The Legend of Vox Machina” takes on sweeping fantasy narratives of dragons, vampires, and monsters. This series will dig into war, politics, and redemption. Riegel explained that over the course of the series the Mighty Nein will slowly learn to trust one another. Potentially finding redemption for their own personal demons in this friendship.

Willingham also revealed that the series will explore themes of how choices have consequences and putting oneself over the group. “Mighty Nein” seems like it will be a much slower burn, not only in the evolution of the group but also in their journey to becoming heroes. The changes that are being teased set this series up to be an exciting new chapter in Critical Role’s animation adventure.

Mighty Nein will debut on Prime Video November 19. The first three seasons of “The Legend of Vox Machina” are available on Prime Video now.
