Comic powerhouse DC is getting creative with their new female-led titles and audiences are very excited. Stargirl and Mary Marvel have all gotten solo titles. Let’s take a look at the new leading ladies.
The New Champion of Shazam features a leading character other than the popularized Billy Batson. Mary Marvel finally takes center stage and sheds years of being a sidekick.
In 1945, Mary Marvel did have her own title. However, much like Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Lane, Mary appeared as a side character in her own title more often than not. Mary is one of the longest standing DC women. The New Champion of Shazam recognizes Mary’s time spent overlooked and pulls her out of her insecurity of being a sidekick.
In Billy’s absence, Mary is called upon to take his place. In doing so, Mary goes from being a part of a team to being the leader. Though the Marvel family has always been featured in addition to helping Billy out when he needs it most, we have rarely seen any of them on their own.
The comic keeps the tone of all other Shazam comics; it’s cheesy and campy with just the right amount of humor.
Next up is Stargirl. Courtney Whitmore AKA Stargirl had her own TV series, written by comic book writers. Now, she’s been granted a new title in print.
Stargirl is told in a unique way, as the titular character doesn’t come into the picture until page 6. The setting and the villains are set up thoroughly before Stargirl even enters the scene. Stargirl is one of the newest DC women, but she is perfect for younger girls that want to see themselves in a superhero.
Overall, DC is doing some incredible storytelling, utilizing their female characters to the fullest. It would be nice to see Marvel and DC continue their upward trend of putting their women characters front and center.
