Interview with voice actor Zeno Robinson at Anime Pasadena 2021

mmPosted by

This year, Anime Pasadena brought in some incredible voice actors as special guests. One of those was Zeno Robinson. Zeno is known for dubbing the voices of many anime characters. Among those characters are Hawks (My Hero Academia), Onyankopon (Attack on Titan), Goh (Pokémon Journeys: The Series), and Shokichi Oka (Sk8 the Infinity).

When asked what he thought the coolest thing at the convention was, Zeno replied:

This cosplayer, she cosplayed as Hawks of course, and she won the cosplay contest! But like…her cosplay was crazy! Like, she had these extending Hawks wings and they were like really, like, they were long. Like, she couldn’t even fit through the door, you know. But she made it all herself, and all the detailing in it was like perfect and accurate and immaculate.”

Hawks is an incredibly popular character among the My Hero Academia fanbase. Hawks is the number two hero in Japan in the anime. He’s young, seemingly carefree, and well-loved by the people in the city he works to protect. When asked what he would want fans to take away from or to understand about this character, Zeno said:

I want fans to understand that everything isn’t always under the surface what they show you. Just, you don’t know what battles people are fighting. But like, really, I feel like there’s a lot of Hawks…I kind of really want them to take away that, like, people are very, very complex and multi-faced and multi-faceted. Good or bad, and that’s worth kind of respecting.

Now, everyone at some point has taken one of those personality quizzes that tells you which character you are from different franchises. If Zeno took one of those “Which My Hero Academia characters are you?” quizzes, then would he get Hawks or someone else?

If I don’t get Hawks, I’m probably getting Deku. Honestly, yeah yeah. Or maybe Kirishima! Maybe Kirishima. Those are the three people I feel like I would get.
