Keeping a secret is hard enough, but sitting on public transit knowing you’re secretly playing the most iconic villain in comic book history? That takes a specific kind of discipline. Actor Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon) chats with Nick Williams to discuss the relief of finally revealing his secret role: he is the new voice of the Joker in Prime Video’s animated noir series, Batman: Caped Crusader.
San Diego Comic-Con attendees were treated to an exclusive first look at the future of Gotham City during the world premiere screening and Q&A for Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2. Gathering in Room 6BCF, fans got an advance look at the noir animated series’ season opener, and the panel didn’t stop there. From the surprise reveal of Matthew Needham as the voice of The Joker to the announcement of a companion video game, here is everything that went down at one of SDCC’s most anticipated panels.
“It’s a relief that it’s out there now,” Needham shared. “It’s a weird secret to carry around. You know, you’re just sort of on the bus going, ‘I’m the Joker,’ and nobody knows it.”
Stepping Out of the Shadow of Giants
Taking on the Clown Prince of Crime is no small task, especially given the character’s storied history in animation. Needham didn’t shy away from acknowledging the high bar set by those who came before him.
“Mark Hamill is as definitive as I think it’s possible to get with this character,” Needham admitted, pointing out that measuring up to iconic performances is practically impossible. However, what made taking the role exciting was how radically different this iteration is from previous takes. “The great thing about this iteration is that it’s a complete departure from the Joker that you think you’ve known before,” Needham explained. “He’s very serious. He ain’t funny. He’s very cool, calm, collected, and menacing. And he’s so fucking evil.”
Crafting a Noir Villain
Batman: Caped Crusader leans heavily into a dark, classic noir aesthetic, which deeply influenced how Needham approached the character. Interestingly, Needham recorded his performance without seeing character sketches or concept art beforehand, relying entirely on the scripts and direct guidance from the creative team.
“I didn’t know what he looked like. They didn’t show me any sketches or images, so I was just going off the script, and the scripts are brilliant,” Needham said.
When asked about finding the voice in the booth, Needham revealed that leaning into classic Joker tropes wasn’t what the production team wanted. “There is that sort of manic energy that just creeps in during recording, and [voice director Gene and the producers] were so good at pulling me back. They were going, ‘No, no, no—less, less, less. We want quieter, gentler.'” Needham admitted that pulling back the manic energy felt unusual at first. “It felt really weird to do, and I’m so interested to see it paired then with the amazing animation and character design.”
What Fans Can Expect
While Needham remained tight-lipped on specific plot details to avoid spoilers, he didn’t hold back on setting expectations for how dark the character’s storyline gets.
“I’m interested to see how fucking evil he is,” Needham said. “I’m really interested to see how dark this guy gets, because it gets pretty dark.” For fans eager to see a chilling, grounded, and genuinely terrifying take on Batman’s greatest nemeses, Needham’s performance promises a thrilling new chapter in Gotham’s history.
