Critical Role’s all-new animated series, “The Mighty Nein,” is just around the corner. The series is based on Critical Role’s second campaign. “The Mighty Nein” follows a ragtag group of misfits, criminals, and outsiders. These are not who anyone would pick as heroes in a time of chaos and conflict, but that is exactly what they may need to become. With war between the Dwendalian Empire and Kryn Dynasty on the horizon and political pitfalls at every turn, the Mighty Nein will have danger closing in around them.

“The Mighty Nein” is set years after the events of “The Legend of Vox Machina” in a different part of Exandria. The animated series introduces a slew of new characters. “The Legend of Vox Machina” is more comedic, inspired by traditional fantasy epics. However, “The Mighty Nein” is a darker, grittier political espionage thriller. To introduce the characters and world of this series, Temple of Geek has “Nine Days Until The Mighty Nein.” In our previous episodes we introduced Fjord Stone, Jester Lavorre, and Beauregard Lionett.

Meet Caleb Widogast Of The Mighty Nein

In our fourth episode we introduce Caleb Widogast. Caleb is played by Liam O’Brien, who plays Vax in “The Legend of Vox Machina” and Campaign 1. He is a human wizard, meaning his magic comes from his studies as opposed to innate powers or intervention from a deity. Caleb grew up in the Zemnian Fields near Rexxentrum.

His skills with the arcane were recognized, and he joined the Soltryce Academy. Caleb caught the eye of a powerful mage always looking for more power and control. The corrupt wizard recruited Caleb into a specialized program that trained him to do whatever it took in the name of the Empire. However, after an especially dark act, Caleb snapped. He left the academy and was abandoned in an asylum.

Caleb would eventually find his way out, turning to petty crime to support himself and his need to acquire components for his magic. He would eventually meet Nott The Brave, a goblin girl, who would help him escape danger. The duo bond and decide to team up. Nott and Caleb would eventually run into a number of other oddballs, eventually becoming the Mighty Nein.
