“The Mighty Nein” premieres tomorrow. Over the course of Temple of Geek’s “Nine Days Until The Mighty Nein,” we’ve introduced you to a number of key characters. This of course includes the titular crew with Fjord Stone, Jester Lavorre, Beau Lionett, Caleb Widogast, Nott The Brave, Mollymauk Tealeaf, and Yasha Nydoorin. Following these introductions, we ran through some of the key non-player characters that will play a role in this season. Now we are looking at “The Mighty Nein” beyond the characters that make up this world of the series.
The World Of The Mighty Nein
In our final episode of “Nine Days Until The Mighty Nein,” we’ll be talking about the world of the animated series. “The Mighty Nein” is set about two decades after the events of “The Legend of Vox Machina.” Although the story of “The Legend of Vox Machina” has not yet been told in full, the events of the final two seasons likely won’t come into play in “The Mighty Nein.”
While still set in Exandria, “The Mighty Nein” is set on the continent of Wildemount. The primary locations being within the Dwendalian Empire, the Menagerie Coast, and the Kryn Dynasty. For years the Dwendalian Empire and Kryn Dynasty have had a cold war of sorts. But in this series it finally comes to a head when an ancient relic is stolen from the Kryn. This relic is central to their culture and religion.
The Kryn Dynasty don’t follow the same religious practices as the rest of Exandria. Where they follow the gods, including the Raven Queen and Everlight, the Kryn Dynasty’s religion comes from a completely different creation myth. Dunamancy and incarnation are at the center of their religion and society as a whole. Dunamancy, created by Matthew Mercer, is based in potential with ties to gravity, time, and fate.
The Dwendalian Empire

The Dwendalian Empire is a kingdom that has grown through conquest. Ruled by King Dwendal, technology, magic, and power are coveted. The powerful magical and political force of the Cerberus Assembly is the perfect example of this. These powerful mages of the Empire, including Trent Ikithon, work for the crown. Some act as King Dwendal’s advisors. They vie for power, both political and arcane. Corruption runs rampant. The urban myth of the Volstrucker, wizard assassins, are rumored to be tied to them in some capacity as well.
Outside of the Dwendalian Empire is the Menagerie Coast, which includes Nicodranas and Port Damali. They are trade partners and allies with the Dwendalian Empire. Outside the politics of the Empire and Dynasty is the Cobalt Soul. An order of monks dedicated to finding and protecting knowledge. They have temples all around Exandria. The Cobalt Soul also covertly works to stop corruption and tyranny and fight for freedom of all.
“The Mighty Nein” is set in a different era and a different part of Exandria. It is also a completely different tone and style of story. “The Legend of Vox Machina” is a more traditional epic fantasy with heroes fighting against dragons and monsters to save the day while sharing quips and jokes. “The Mighty Nein” is a much more gritty political thriller. Another key difference is the protagonists. These are not heroes in any sense of the word. Criminals and misfits full of anger, suspicion, resentment, and secrets, they will need to grow into the heroes they’ll need to be.
“The Mighty Nein” premieres on Prime Video November 19.
