We are breaking down how to put together an Osamu Dazai cosplay from the anime Bungo Stray Dogs. Dazai’s outfit from the anime is very similar to the one in the manga.
Bungo Stray Dogs is both a manga and anime written by Kafka Asagiri. The manga is illustrated by Sango Harukawa. The story follows people with special abilities who form the “Armed Detective Agency.” Their job is to protect Yokohama, Japan. Osamu Dazai is one of the main characters actively involved in the “Armed Detective Agency.”
Osamu Dazai
Osamu Dazai is a special, gifted man who is one of the heads of the “Armed Detective Agency.” His ability is to nullify other abilities, called “No Longer Human.” Each character is named after a real-life author, and their abilities are named after their literary works.
Bungo Stray Dogs currently has three seasons, one movie, and a special OVA episode. Dazai wears the same outfit in a majority of the episodes. His hair is brown and has a shaggy wave to it. Finding a proper wig can prove to be tricky, but with a little styling, this option works well:
As with any cosplay, putting together a Dazai cosplay should be fun and comfortable. Using any brown wig or your natural hair is perfectly fine.
Dazai Cosplay
Dazai, like most animated characters, wears the same outfit in almost the whole series. There are a few episodes where his outfit differs, but we will get to that later. First off, you will need bandages of some kind. Dazai has his arms and neck wrapped in cloth bandages. Gauze, white fabric, or ACE Bandages will work.
Next, Dazai wears a trench coat. The trench coat is either tan or beige, but brown would also work for this outfit. In the anime, the bandages are wrapped all of the way up his arms. In the manga, the bandages stop at his elbow. Dazai rolls up the sleeves of his shirt and trench coat, so wrapping the bandages to your elbow may be easier than full-arm.
As far as his shirt goes, sometimes it looks white and sometimes it looks blue. Also, once in a while, there appears to be pinstripes. As long as the button-up shirt is a light color, the pinstripes are not necessary. Choose a shirt that makes you comfortable and you like the best.
Then, Dazai wears a black vest and a bolo tie. The black vest is basic. The bolo tie is a green/blue pendant with dark brown string. You can find a variety of bolo ties that work well on Etsy as well as Amazon.
Light beige pants and brown or black shoes finish off this Dazai cosplay. An extra accessory is Dazai’s “The Complete Suicide” book.

The first three episodes of Bungo Stray Dogs season 3 explains Dazai’s life when he was fifteen years old. In these episodes, he wears a different outfit than in his adult life in the rest of the series.
His hair is the same, and he also has his arms and neck wrapped in bandages. Not only are his arms and neck wrapped, but Dazai also has bandages on his face. In these episodes, he wears a black trench coat draped over his shoulders. His shirt is white, and he has a standard black tie. Both his pants and shoes are also black.
