“Paper Girls” series is coming to Amazon Prime July 29th

Amazon Prime is bringing Paper Girls to the small screen. The popular comic book series written by Brian K. Vaughn and illustrated by Cliff Chiang began its run in 2015. The adaptation was announced in 2019 and was greenlit in 2020. The show will air on Amazon Prime on July 29th.

Paper Girls

In the nostalgic vein of Stranger Things, the story follows a group of teenage girls who are Paper Girls in 1980s Ohio. One Halloween, the town is invaded by unknown visitors sweeping the girls up into a time war.

The great thing about these characters is that they are instantly relatable, being built off of extremely popular archetypes. The main protagonist, Erin Teing, is very much a self insert character. Erin is a new girl and a classic heroine who gets reluctantly swept up into the story. Mackenzie Coyle is the classic, rebellious, tomboy character. Karina represents all book smart girls and brings balance to the group. Tiffany is the video game, nerd girl. Though built off of basic character structures seen repeatedly throughout all media, the archetypes lend a reliability to the story and should make for a very easy adaptation.

The time war itself is pretty straight forward. It takes place between the “old-timers” and the “teenagers.” This group of teenage girls gets caught up in between the warring factions as they try to help older versions of themselves navigate this war. The girls become time-jumpers, initially unable to control their jumps through time.

The comic has a very distinct and consistent color palette that helps it tell its story. From the looks of the trailer, the adaptation tries to stick true to that color pallet as best it can. Vaughn and Chiang are executive producers on the project, securing its accuracy and ties to the source material.

Be sure to watch Paper Girls on Amazon Prime on the 29th.
