Our Toniebox has been a mainstay in our family for years now. We first got the original Toniebox for my daughter as a gift from an aunt and uncle for Christmas. It came with a single Tonie at the time, her first of many, Beauty and the Beast. Since then, her collection has grown, and “Can I listen to Story Box?” has been a repeated phrase almost every day. My daughter is five now, almost six, and she still uses her Toniebox (and still calls it her Story Box), on every car trip, before bed, and during playtime in her room. When we upgraded to a Toniebox 2 and introduced the various games, you’d have thought we had reinvented fun. It has become a staple of her life, with an impressive collection of Tonies to call her own.

Enter the Pokémon Tonies.

Toniebox is no stranger to popular collaborations. From Disney to Dr Seuss, from Spider-Man to Sesame Street, the Tonie aisle at a store is a who’s who of popular kids’ properties. Many of which, as an adult, I myself had grown up on. So when Pokémon announced they were joining with Toniebox to release four new Tonies, I already knew they would become part of my daughter’s roster. Four Pokémon and a brand-new color of Toniebox all dropped, and so I sat down with my daughter to see how she felt about them as someone who herself is just beginning to truly get into Pokémon.

My daughter isn’t yet the world’s greatest Pokemon master. At best, she might be on her first gym badge metaphorically. But! She already has her favorite all time Pokemon; Espeon, her favorite Pokémon typing; Fire, and her favorite Pokémon game; wasting all of her dad’s Pokeballs catching Pokemon in Pokémon Go. But when she was presented with the four Pokémon Tonies, she was all about them. 

Four Pokémon Tonies were all released together: Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Each one follows a very similar track format, but with different content centered around the main Tonie Pokémon. The basic breakdown goes like this: You get a very good Professor Oak-ish narrator to introduce the Pokemon of choice to you. Then there is a Story involving the Pokemon alongside other Pokemon throughout; you get an “educational” section teaching you about a different aspect of Pokemon, like how Berries work or about Type Advantages, and then you get a really fun Pokemon Battle narrated like it was an actual sporting event. There are 3 Stories per Tonie: 2 Trainer Academy sections, the Introduction, the Battle, and a Conclusion. All in all, the Pokemon Tonies are very robust offerings for young fans, and each one runs for roughly an hour and fifteen minutes apiece. 

There is also a brand new Toniebox 2 to help celebrate the collaboration, this time in vibrant Pikachu Yellow. The color is very striking and pops from any angle. I do feel it is a bit of a missed opportunity not to have the Toniebox “ears” redone as Pikachu ears, or to have a Pikachu tail painted on one of the sides, but the color alone does the Pikachu theming justice, so it all works out in the end. The Pokémon Tonies themselves are also high quality, looking like they got pulled right out of the anime. Charmander was my daughter’s favorite of the designs because “his tail fire looks so cute,” so I guess Charmander wins the looks contest. 

I have seen excellent Tonies, and I have seen some subpar Tonies in my years as a Tonie parent. The Pokémon ones are firmly in the “Excellent” category. Each one has a lot of content, looks great, and is from a brand that resonates with people young and old, boy or girl. Do I think you need to “Catch Them All,” so to speak? Not necessarily. Each one has identical content structures. The only real shift is the Pokémon that is at the center of the action and stories. So pick the one(s) that are best for your kids, and become a Toniebox Champion, like no one ever was.

But what do I know? What really matters is what the five-year-old burgeoning Pokémon fan thinks of the Tonies. I will pull some direct quotes from my questioning of her after she’d listened to all four of them no fewer than two times.
