Star Wars and superhero fan draws outfit inspo from bloggers, cosplayers

Whether dressing up a geeky tee or putting together an epic outfit or Disneybound, Emily Ong (@thestylishgeek) draws inspiration from the work of fellow fashion bloggers and cosplayers. A fan of “subtle geekery” who loves skirts and dresses, she takes her style motivation from Star Wars, superheroes, classic Disney, and video games.

What are your diehard fandoms?

Definitely Star Wars and superheroes with a little bit of classic Disney. I’m also a big gamer, so it just depends on what I’m playing at the moment.

How would you describe your personal geek style?

I think I take inspiration from not only other geeky fashion bloggers (@geekyglamorous, @tiffmink, @damfino, @heymeylynn, @yumeworlock, @starwars.style, to name a few) but also non-geeky fashion bloggers and lots of cosplayers. I’m a big fan of subtle geekery and tend to dress depending on what inspires me or my mood. I love skirts and dresses (funny considering I was a tomboy and rarely wore them until after college) and find myself trying to constantly figure out how to dress up a geeky tee or wear something that’s geek, but chic.

What favorite geek fashion items can be found in your closet?

Besides my numerous geeky shirts, I love some of the Her Universe pieces that I’ve acquired over the years. One of my favorites is this gold Star Wars 40th anniversary bomber jacket that they came out with a couple of years ago. I also have some of the retro-style dresses that their fashion show designers made (like the BB-8 and First Order Stormtrooper one).

I also love when designers collaborate with companies like Marvel, Disney, and Star Wars. For example, Kate Spade came out with the cutest Minnie Mouse backpack a few years ago and I also have these fun Irregular Choice Han Solo flats that I don’t wear often enough. Collabs are great because you still get the style with that subtle, geeky flair.

Describe your go-to geeky outfit.

That would probably be a geeky shirt with a skirt followed by a denim or leather jacket. Nowadays though, I just throw on a big t-shirt (especially the ones I never get to wear to work) and some tie-dye sweatpants.

Where do you find yourself searching or shopping the most for your geek fashion needs?

I shop A LOT so really it’s all over the internet. I definitely browse the big sites like Hot Topic, BoxLunch, or the Disney store for fandom stuff, but will sometimes find cool collabs on other sites like Uniqlo, Zara, and even Forever 21.

Feel free to shout out any personal geeky passions, projects, or business endeavors:

Ever since the pandemic, I’ve actually had more time to be creative with my outfits and post more on my blog (www.thestylishgeek.com). I was also really excited to finally have the time to participate in last month’s Disneybound challenge (@thedisneybound) so that was really fun (and also lots of work to keep up with)!
