Posted by Many women of both the DC and the Marvel universes got their chance to shine last year. A lot of new limited series were launched as well as ongoing titles, all centering around the superpowered women of these worlds. In an industry that has been seriously lacking in women led titles for the better part of almost 90 years, it was a welcome and much needed wave of estrogen. Among the new titles was Storm. You may know her as one of the main players in the X-Men but she has a rich history and incredible stand alone potential. Here is our Storm comic review.
Storm Comic Review
Her 2023 series was written by Ann Nocenti and drawn by Sid Kotain and Geraldo Borges. The story centers around our weather controlling superwoman. The story starts with Storm leading the X-Men into a battle with Mystique and the Brotherhood of Mutants. For a team that started in 1963, the characterizations have been rather consistent. Wolverine is still gruff but wise, and Storm is still powerful, brilliant and definitely a leader. In this series, she is missing Kenya and is questioning her relationship with her powers.Â
When the weather stops obeying her, and in fact seems to turn on her she concludes that she needs to find her way back to her roots, Storm feels like she needs to go back to Kenya to reconnect with her powers and herself.Â
This is such a beautiful story of self discovery, acceptance, and the willingness to work on oneself. The X-Men has always been a very internal kind of comic book. The team members have always been conduits for incredible social commentary and introspective work. Storm’s very overdue solo story is no different.Â
These new women-led series are not only increasing the amount of female stories that young girls and women that love comics get to read, but most of them are also written by women. Marvel and DC have both made so much progress in the last year towards making comic books a more comfortable and welcoming place for women and girls.Â
