Thanks to Annual Passholder culture, Instagram influencers, and much-hyped additions to the theme parks, enthusiasm for all things Disney has reached an all-time high.
Maybe you’re searching for something different to wear on your next trip to the parks or an alternative to the official merchandise everyone seems to be wearing. While prepping for a vacation to Disneyland in 2018, mom and artist Sam decided to make custom light-up mouse ears for the family to wear. Needless to say, they were a hit.
“Soon I had people asking me to make them hats and ears,” she said. “It didn’t take too long for me to realize I had my hands full, so my husband jumped in the business.”
Matt is a graphic designer and has collaborated with Sam on many new ShimmerPop designs. The couple has shifted their focus from hats and ears to theme park apparel.
“While we do a lot of Disney-inspired designs, we love all pop culture and are constantly coming up with new ideas,” Sam said. Their non-Disney designs include riffs on Ghostbusters and Harry Potter.
The shop also offers pop culture-themed products, including personalized tumblers and travel cups, coasters (some of which glow in the dark), wine glasses, and custom rhinestones. (You can find these items in ShimmerPop’s Etsy shop.)
We asked geek models Dylan Fisher, Doc In The Box, and Lavender Vroman to pretend they were at The Happiest Place on Earth and try out ShimmerPop’s tees.
Welcome Foolish Mortals Long Sleeve T-Shirt
Disney’s Haunted Mansion celebrated its 50th anniversary this fall, prompting the Mouse House to release a ton of new merch. However, you won’t find a design quite like this one among them. The simple, slightly creepy logo features the silhouette of the instantly recognizable placard that greets guests as they enter the attraction.
What we love about it: The tee is a fresh, unfussy take on the signature Haunted Mansion aesthetic that fans of the classic attraction love. The spooky black and purple against the dark gray really pops. Foolish Mortals will want to rock this tee to their next swinging wake.
Dylan tried the Dark Heather-colored long sleeve version in a “unisex” size Large. He described the shirt as “awesome,” as well as “super soft.” He said the tee runs a little long but is still “great.”
Sandy Claws V-Neck T-Shirt
We took this Nightmare Before Christmas-themed women’s T-shirt to the sandy shore of Santa Monica, a strangely fitting setting for Sandy Claws.
The top’s minimalist design packs a graphically pleasing punch. A Santa hat-wearing Oogie Boogie’s green eyes and smile glow against a ghostly black background. Lavender modeled a small, Heather Gray shirt that was true to size in a crisp cotton-polyester blend.
What we love about it: With its bright, playful green and red lettering, this fun, festive T-shirt is perfect for the Christmas season. Fans of The Nightmare Before Christmas will want to rep their favorite gamblin’ boogie man with a yuletide twist. Wear it to your holiday party or, you know, to kidnap the Sandy Claws.
Cantina Party T-Shirt
Now that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has opened at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, the geek fashion industry is in overdrive, designing outfits to wear to the fictional planet of Batuu.
ShimmerPop’s Cantina Party shirt fits this description and then some, featuring beat-dropping droid (and former Star Tours pilot) DJ R3X, one of the main attractions of Oga’s Cantina. Doc In The Box channeled some serious Star Wars vibes while wearing the Large men’s fit version of this shirt.
What we love about it: The Force is strong with this clever design. It’s instantly appealing, thanks to its eye-catching red, yellow, and gold color scheme. This was definitely our favorite shirt of the samples we tried. It’s perfect for photo opps in Batuu and, especially, Oga’s Cantina. Just be prepared to have multiple fans ask where you got your shirt.
Overall:
We’re enchanted with ShimmerPop’s sharp, creative, original Disney-themed designs. These are basic tees taken up a notch with fun, unique imagery. They’d be a blast to wear to the theme parks or anywhere else.
