Temple of Geek’s “This Week In Geek”: May 2nd 2021

Welcome to Temple of Geek’s rundown of This Week In Geek. Each week, we get quite a bit of news about the pop-culture world. Kristen Chavez walks us through everything happening this week.

This Week In Geek – Television

It was technically last week, but now that just about everyone has seen it — how about that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale?! Without any other spoilers, it was such a treat to finally see Sam as Captain America. And even though the show ended, Disney+ premiered “Assembled” as a behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. If you haven’t already, then make sure you check out the Temple of Geek podcast to hear Aaron and Alexandra’s thoughts on it, or our Instagram Live discussion with Maddie, Elizabeth, and Jenn!

Production began on the Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon. In a photo of the table read, we saw some of the cast, including Matt Smith, Olivia Cook, Emma D’Arcy, and Paddy Considine.

The superhero show Invincible on Amazon Prime finished up its first season. Amazon Studios announced it has renewed Robert Kirkman’s (The Walking Dead) hour-long, adult animated series for a second and third season. Invincible stars Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Zachary Quinto, and more.

Netflix announced that Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal the Movie will premiere globally on its platform on June 3. The upcoming adventures are set in April when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and Tokyo is in a festive mood as it celebrates the largest Total Solar Eclipse of the century. As the new moon obscures the sun and gradually dims its light, Usagi and Chibi-Usa encounter Pegasus, who is in search of the chosen Maiden who can break the seal of the Golden Crystal. Meanwhile, a mysterious troupe called the Dead Moon Circus appears in town whose nefarious plan is to scatter the nightmare incarnations known as Lemures, seize the ‘Legendary Silver Crystal,’ rule over the moon and the earth, and eventually dominate the entire universe

It adds to Netflix’s growing anime collection, which also recently added Yasuke. This is a series about a Black samurai that premiered this week starring Lakeith Stanfield. Yasuke is a six-episode series created by LeSean Thomas, set in alternate fantastical Japan during the feudal era. The story is about a samurai warrior of African descent who must return to his life of sword and violence in order to protect a mysterious girl from the dark forces.

Shadow and Bone also premiered on Netflix, based on the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo.

Shadow and Bone finds us in a war-torn world where the lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn from everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. As she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive. Shadow and Bone is a Netflix production from 21 Laps Entertainment, starring Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), and Ben Barnes (General Kirigan).

This Week In Geek – Film

The Oscars were this past Sunday, and while overall viewership was down, there were certainly some memorable moments. Disney picked up 5 Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature for Soul. Nomadland won for Best Picture, and Chloe Zhao made history as the first woman of color and the first Asian woman to win for best director.

For my fellow musical fans, we saw new trailers for upcoming films. In the Heights debuted a new trailer, and we also got a first look at West Side Story, which will come out in December.
