“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” finale live discussion

On Instagram Live, host Maddie talked with Jenn and Elizabeth about “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” finale. This episode brought on feelings of joy, speculation, confusion, and everything in between. This does contain spoilers.

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” finale started with a bang

Last week, we saw Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) give Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) a gift from Wakanda. Most people believed that it was a new suit. However, there was no confirmation as that was the way the episode ended. This episode started off with Sam, now Captain America, coming in wearing his new suit and wielding the shield! The suit is almost identical to the way it looks in the comic books.

Jenn talks about her feelings seeing the new suit:

“When I saw it, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ It looks so much better than I thought it would! Not because I didn’t have faith in Marvel. It was just because I didn’t know which route they were going to take…were they going to be free about it…or were they going to go with the comic book? And so, I was just very much surprised…He looks so good!”

Sam, now Captain America, delivers an incredible speech

After a fight with the Flag Smashers, one in which Karli (Erin Kellyman) is killed by Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), Sam talks to the Senators and really to the world watching. He knows what it is like to feel helpless. He understands the hard choices the Flag Smashers had to make because the world was not listening. A powerful line Sam delivers is, “[my] power is that I believe we can do better.”

Jenn discusses her feelings on the power behind Sam’s speech:

“The audacity of the senator. Just straight up ‘you don’t understand.’ What? I just looked at him and was like here we go again…no, he [Sam] understands. It’s 500 years plus of history that is literally proved to you that, yes, he does know…he said this was the first time they all collectively understand.”

Elizabeth also felt strongly about the message:

“What I really loved was that he did it as soon as everything had settled down. He didn’t wait to like, talk to them when they reconvened for the vote or anything. He did it then and there, in front of cameras that he knew were recording…so there was some accountability if they did not listen.”

John Walker, Sharon Carter, and Isaiah Bradley

In this episode, we see John Walker (Wyatt Russel) become U.S. Agent. He gets the comic-book accurate suit and the new name. There is some speculation that the Marvel Thunderbolts are coming. The Thunderbolts, in essence, are “bad guys” trying to do good things. One member of the Thunderbolts happens to be Zemo. Only time will tell what Marvel Studios intends on doing with these characters.

Now, Sharon Carter was revealed to supposedly be the Power Broker.

It is hard to believe that someone with a clean record and a love for serving her country would go dark so quickly.

Jenn has some possible theories:

“Sharon has every right to be upset about not being able to come home. Being on the run…but I truly…either she’s double crossing somebody for one thing. Two, or, we are getting ‘Secret Invasion’ later on or whatever. But, it could be a Skrull moment. I refuse to believe she is the Power Broker.”

Also, Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) gets a visit from Sam after his big speech on television. Sam can confidently say that he is prepared to be a Black Captain America. They built and bled for their country, it’s only right that he fight for it. Sam was able to give Isaiah Bradley his own wing in the Smithsonian.

Elizabeth says:

“One thing that I really like about that scene, too, was when Sam handed over the shield to the museum, it was this huge press conference. A lot of people were there, reporters there, everything, but Sam really respected Isaiah’s wishes in a way where he didn’t make it a huge thing to introduce the world to this man…he brought him and his grandson, it was jus them to show them what they put together.”

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” finale has a happy ending

The episode ends with a montage of community and togetherness. We see Sam’s community sharing meals, laughing, being together, and Bucky was involved. Bucky looks truly happy and unashamed of who he has grown to become.

Jenn says:

“Even when they were sitting down together at the table. It was Sarah, the boys, and Sam and Bucky, it was just a family. He [Bucky] found his family.”

Elizabeth says:

“I was so glad that it ended, aside from the post-credit scene, it just ended on such a happy note. There was happy music all of the way through the credits.”

What did you think of the finale? Will there be a second season? A new show titled “Captain America and the Winter Soldier?” Will we get a movie?

A huge thank you to the special guests on the live, Jenn and Elizabeth!
