The relationship between the members of the Mighty Nein is one of the most engaging elements of the story. “The Mighty Nein” is taking the time to develop them naturally. This begins with introducing each character individually and showing how their connections evolve. While there are countless dynamics that have touched fans, one that will be prominent from the start is the friendship between Caleb Widogast and Nott The Brave.

Caleb Widogast and Nott The Brave are voiced by Liam O’Brien and Sam Riegel, respectively. O’Brien and Riegel, like their characters, are very close friends and have been for over a decade. In Campaign 2 their friendship was established even before the beginning of the story. Now, fans will have the chance to see these characters meet and how their bond grew.

During an exclusive interview with Temple of Geek, O’Brien shared how they chose the most important aspects of each character for “The Mighty Nein.” “We had the blessing to be able to spend all of our time picking up the most important features to us for each of these characters and crafting them into the most finely honed version of their story. So, we were able to highlight the things that were most important and then leave behind things that weren’t necessary.”  

Sam Riegel Reveals What Nott Initially Sees In Caleb

The relationship between Nott and Caleb is one of the elements of this story that they wanted to highlight early on. In this interview Riegel also shared what Nott first sees in Caleb that sets him apart. He also shared not only how they are similar, but the moment in the first episode that really draws Nott to Caleb.

“I think they are two lost souls who just want someone to have faith in them or at least not treat them like a monster. And when Nott first meets Caleb, he treats her like a regular person. After they scuffle a little bit, but he seems like he’s not shocked by her appearance and not horrified by the fact that she’s a goblin. And that enough makes him the most interesting person she’s met in a long time. She also sees his vulnerability, I think. In that first episode, she sees him in a really broken place and relying on magic to make himself a friend, which is so sad. And she realizes that he’s a lost soul and maybe they can help each other find their way in this crazy Matthew Mercer world.”

Nott has likely had a very hard life. Riegel alluding to her being seen as a monster and Caleb’s acceptance being remarkable makes that clear. Their connection seems to begin from a mutual ability to see not necessarily the good in one another, but simply seeing one another as a person. This foundation builds a strong and unrelenting bond if their story in “The Mighty Nein” is anything like Campaign 2.

The real love that Riegel and O’Brien have shared shone through during Campaign 2. It seems that will continue in “The Mighty Nein.” O’Brien revealed how meaningful it was to record the moment Nott and Caleb met.

“The thing that stands out to me is the relationship with Caleb and Nott in this show, in this season especially. All of the Nein will grow together with time if we’re lucky and we have the room to explore that, but my relationship with Sam, my longtime friendship with Sam, getting to have this beautiful alternate mirrored reality version of itself is very special to both of us. But speaking for myself, I just, I love Sam; he’s one of my oldest friends in the world, and I will admit here that I could not stop myself from crying that day recording their introduction to each other. This show is magic; I’m so proud of it. I can’t wait for people to see it. There’re so many beautiful aspects of it; I can’t wait.”

The Mighty Nein as a whole have a beautiful relationship with different dynamics shining through as different relationships and different types of relationships blossom. However, at the heart of this have always been Caleb and Nott. Pulled from the true friendship and love that Riegel and O’Brien have for one another, that friendship has been strong from the moment Campaign 2 began.

“The Mighty Nein” gives audiences a chance to see how that bond began, from their meeting to the protective friendship it becomes. O’Brien and Riegel have clearly put a lot of thought and care into crafting it once again. It is not only clear in this interview but also palpable in the series itself.
