The first season of “The Mighty Nein” featured some impressive action sequences with carnival disaster, fighting the Devil Toad, and facing off against the Volstrucker. However, the finale fight between Trent Ikithon and the Kryn Dynasty stands out. This is a battle that was featured in Campaign 2, but it wasn’t as noticeably integral to the plot with the Mighty Nein.
Showrunner Tasha Huo is marrying the events, characters, and spirit of the campaign with Matt Mercer’s untold story. He crafted a detailed espionage thriller set against a high-stakes politically driven war. And that is at the heart of the animated series. The finale wizard battle is a prime example of how Huo is interweaving what fans know or expect from Campaign 2 with the larger untold story.
In Temple of Geeks’ exclusive interview with Huo, she shares what moment she was most excited to bring to life via animation. Huo is bringing to life story beats and arcs that were never fully explored on screen. The pivotal moment that stands out to Huo may be familiar, but it takes on new life in “The Mighty Nein.”
The Mighty Nein Showrunner Was Excited To Bring The Wizard Battle To The Forefront Of The Story
Huo has been able to bring a number of storylines to life that were never explored in Campaign 2 with “The Mighty Nein.” The series also approaches events that did happen from a new angle or perspective. Huo revealed why the wizard battle in the finale was the moment she was most excited to bring to life on screen.
Tasha Huo:
“I think for season one, it’s the wizard fight. The wizard battle for sure, because I remember in the Campaign, it’s like, “Oh, that thing happening way over there. It’s so weird and random. Oh, well, we’re going to go to this other thing. And oh, sure, like the city seems affected, but we don’t want any part of whatever is going on there.” So, getting to connect that because it was very connected.
Matt was very particular about what that fight was about. So, getting to talk to him more about, “Hey, what was going on there?” And of course, he had a whole story for what had happened to cause that wizard fight, of course, because as a DM at any point, the players could have come across that storyline and could have been a part of something like that.
So, in the show, we got to actually make them a part of that, which is really, really cool because I love that scene from the Campaign. And it also is so key to their storyline, but they just were never a part of it. So that was one where it was like, “Great, let’s mash these guys together, and let’s make it actually integral to what they’re doing this episode.””
Temple of Geek: I do love that. Because as funny as it is in the campaign that there’s a giant explosion. The Nein go, “yikes,” and then move on. It does make sense for that to be a bigger part of the story.
Tasha Huo:
“We only see it from really far away. And it’s like, “Oh, cool, that thing that’s happening.” Now we get to actually be amidst that fight. And that’s really f-cking cool.”
Temple of Geek: I do love for Matt [Mercer] that just he has the word document and is like, here you go. Here’s all the stories that we didn’t do.
Tasha Huo:
“Yeah, yeah, pretty much. It has been very fun to be like, “Hey, that one thing felt like it was bigger. Was it bigger?” He’s like, “Yeah, it was bigger. Let me sit down, and we’ll talk about that.””
Temple of Geek: Yes, it was bigger. Also, it’s connected to these three things that were never mentioned.
Tasha Huo:
100%, 100%, like the Ludinus storyline, which they never explored or ever talked about. Turns out to be very important [later on in Critical Role].
Mercer crafted an immersive, sprawling political war for Campaign 2. However, that wasn’t the adventure the players played out. Now, he has a second chance to bring the story full of espionage and political warfare to life on screen. Huo’s excitement about bringing the two stories together, Mercer’s plan and the events of Campaign 2, is palpable. It perfectly encapsulates what makes “The Mighty Nein” such a masterful adaptation.
The first season of “The Mighty Nein” is available to watch on Prime Video now.
