The Mighty Nein Mollymauk

The Mighty Nein Showrunner Teases Setting Up Future Storylines For Mollymauk

“The Mighty Nein” is adapting Campaign 2 of Critical Role. The first season is clearly taking inspiration from the early era of the campaign while also digging into aspects of the world that weren’t initially seen. However, they are also setting the stage for the larger overarching Exandria lore that comes into play down the road.

These moments sprinkled throughout the debut season tantalize audiences with the mystery of Mollymauk. It also introduces a new threat similar to Trent Ikithon in Vess DeRogna. Critical Role fans recognize the track that is being laid for the future of the Mighty Nein. The fact that it is coming into play much earlier in the story could mean that, like the Kryn Dynasty and Dwendalian Empire conflict, the series is going to reveal unknown elements to the audience.

In an exclusive interview with Temple of Geek, Tasha Huo teased how they’re laying the groundwork for the future. Mollymauk and Vess DeRogna play pivotal roles in the future adventures of the Mighty Nein. While these storylines aren’t initially prominent, early in the campaign “The Mighty Nein” is teasing them much earlier in the series.

Mollymauk’s Past Is Laying The Groundwork For The Future Of The Mighty Nein

Mollymauk may want to live in the moment and ignore the mysteries in his past. However, that isn’t possible in “The Mighty Nein,” as he discovers strange things in Zadash, including someone who knows him as Lucien, a bloody alter to him, and a powerful apparent enemy in Vess DeRogna. Huo explains how she wanted to recreate the mystery surrounding Molly from the campaign while more clearly laying the groundwork for the future.

Tasha Huo:

“Yeah, that stuff is tricky; as a writer, to have a main character who doesn’t know anything about his past, and learning it along with the audience is very tricky, but it is very rewarding. I think that’s a really good word because, as someone who just wants to know, watching the campaign, that was deep end game stuff. That was stuff that Taliesin [Jaffe] didn’t even know about as he was creating his character.

So, to get to kind of retcon a lot of these things in a way that really, I think, brings out Molly’s character more, taps into some of the stuff that for him was… one of my favorite scenes to get to recreate was him being called Lucian for the first time in 106. Where in the campaign, I remember being like, “What is going on? This is such a crazy mystery.” And, “Is Molly faking it? That he doesn’t know what is behind this?”

And to get to recreate that and show that Molly’s past is a complete mystery to him the same way it was for us as an audience is a really cool experience to get to recreate. But also we have the benefit of knowing endgame stuff. So we get the fun advantage of being able to layer in these deeper things so that one finally does pay off in season million. You’re like, “Oh, they were so smart for doing that because they set it up right from the beginning.””

Vess is peppered throughout the first season. Initially introduced as another powerful wizard similar to Trent Ikithon there is more beneath the surface. Vess is clearly searching for something from her dealings with The Gentleman and her confrontation with Mollymauk. “The Mighty Nein” is setting up the long game with Mollymauk and Vess.

Tasha Huo:

“Yeah, I really love Vess from the campaign. I’m really glad we had room to fit her into the show. And in the way that we did, T’Nia Miller is her voice and just knocks it out of the park in terms of being able to balance that line of we have a bigger villain in Trent, but she’s also quite the villain herself. The manipulation that these two, this Mark Strong and T’Nia Miller, in the same room is pretty crazy. Getting to manipulate each other is very fun. Vess has a really fun storyline. And I’m so glad we get to just kind of sprinkle some breadcrumbs here in season one.”

Flashes Of Possibilities For The Mighty Nein In The Luxon Beacon

The Luxon Beacon is a powerful artifact. To the Kryn Dynasty, it is the center of their religion, culture, and power. To Trent Ikithon, it is a powerful weapon to be utilized for his machinations. However, the premiere showed a different side of the Luxon with flashes of possibility zooming past. Critical Role fans recognized iconic moments and visuals from the campaign. Huo breaks down how they decided which scenes to include in these flashes of possibility.

Tasha Huo:

“We went back and forth so many times on what should go in there. Ultimately, it came down to no one who is not a Critter is going to understand anything. They’re just going to understand, “Oh, I think I see my main characters in there.” And that’s cool. So, is this telling the future? Is it telling an alternate future? But Critters will freeze-frame, as we know, and try to see.

And really, there are always little tiny hints of things to come, but also a blaze on what is to come because that’s part of what the beacon does, right? It doesn’t show you the future. It shows you alternate possibilities that may be just slightly left of center or something like that. So that was also part of it too, which was, “Yeah, we want to show the play in time, and we can see the future, but it may not be the future we’re actually going towards.” We don’t know.”

The first season of “The Mighty Nein” is available to watch on Prime Video now.
