What We Learned About ‘Gears of War: E-Day’ From Direct Presentation

For my money, Gears of War (or just Gears for the real ones) is the best Xbox-focused franchise you could always count on, with little in the way of misses among its games. This makes Gears of War: E-Day a hot topic for fans and those looking for Xbox to put up a fight and stay in competition with Nintendo, PlayStation, and whatever PC has going on. Most importantly, though, will the game be any good? What new stuff will it bring to the table as the sixth mainline game?

All we really knew about it up to today was that it was going to be a prequel focusing back on Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago 14 years before the events of the first Gears of War game. They’re just babies! Long-time fans will remember mentions of and lore about Emergence Day, or E-Day. This is when the Locust Horde first broke through the surface of planet Sera to reclaim it from the humans. It is, quite literally, the catalyst for all events in all Gears of War media, making this game tremendously important to the invested.

To complement the Xbox Games Showcase, a separate Direct presentation focused only on Gears of War: E-Day was shown off right after. We learned a number of things about E-Day, from gameplay details to its release date, and more. Let’s go over all the biggest noteworthy tidbits.

Solemn Beginnings

E-Day starts with Marcus and Dom returning home from war as young veterans of the Pendulum Wars between the Coalition of Ordered Governments and Union of Independent Republics. They are far from unscathed. In the conflict, Dom’s brother and Marcus’ best friend, Carlos Santiago, is tragically killed in conflict. As the two return to civilian life in the city of Kalona, they mourn and try to reintegrate back into society.

Then, E-Day happens. Taking place over three days, this game is the telling of how Sera began to fall to the Locust. It’s also the beginning of what would become an impenetrable brotherhood between Dom and Marcus.

A World Worth Fighting For

Kalona is massively influenced in design by modern industrial urban sprawl. Huge buildings and architecture meld with majestic, natural wonder on the outskirts. There are tight streets and verticality among its playable space that mesh greatly with how Gears of War is played. This coupled with new movement options detailed later means you have more options to tackle the puzzle-like combat scenarios in more ways than ever before.

Environmental storytelling and detail are big factors as well. Buildings collapsing, TVs showing civil emergency messages, and other remnants of normal society dropped at a moment’s notice can be found throughout E-Day. You can find homemade signs draped off of apartment complexes begging for help, see the fissures and wear in concrete, and other lived-in factors that make Kalona its own character as was the goal of the development team. Procedural generation toolsets were used to help make little details with debris and trash possible, though the city itself is totally, completely handmade with purpose.

Expanded Movement and Cover

Despite characters generally controlling like heavy tanks, movement is a huge deal in Gears of War games. Roll dodges, the “roadie run” sprint, and more advanced techniques, like wall bouncing, are integral to the games, particularly in multiplayer competition. In the gameplay demo of E-Day that started the Xbox Games Showcase, one thing stood out: Marcus Fenix was able to run into a sliding animation to reach cover. This presentation shows how you can slide under obstacles like big box trucks. This is huge and will certainly play a big role, along with the established movement staples, to keep you alive. You can even shoot weapons during a slide to create more cinematic action moments. Gameplay montages just got more badass.

Perhaps even bigger, you can jump now! Cross gaps, get to higher ground in a flash, and more. Something as simple as jumping really opens up so much for E-Day.

For cover itself, the cover height was expanded greatly. Low-ground cover allows the player to practically lie down flat. You see a lot more than the typical chest-high stuff the series is known for, and it’s all adaptable. Much of it is also destructible or at least able to be marked or impacted. Cars retain bullet holes, and their windows shatter with force. Hailed as “micro-destruction,” The Coalition really put in the work to make each little thing matter to help tell its greater story of loss and peril.

A New Emotional Core

Gears games have always had a keen sense of emotionality to them. From the iconic “Mad World” trailer of the first game to the personal story beats of Gears 5, the series isn’t afraid to feel. E-Day is poised to turn all that up with the newly introduced Bravo Squad. Two new characters, Lucas Reyes and Mags Carter, join Marcus and Dom to form this unit. Lucas is a green Gear who has never seen combat, now exposed to it on a traumatic scale. Mags, on the other hand, is a former Gear who is plenty hardened from her experiences. They seem like they’ll fit right in with the Gears legends we know and love.

Internal tensions will rise and fall among the greater clamor and tumult of battle. In some ways, you must contend with your teammates just as much as you do the Locust. Fan favorites like Tai Kaliso will also return, younger and less experienced, but loyal to the character itself. Here’s hoping Victor Hoffman returns!

It’s going to be exciting to see how all of these characters with their unique temperaments and motivations coalesce to create another new memorable campaign in E-Day.

The Locust Like Never Before

The Locust, simply put, look so much bigger and badder than ever. Boomers are more hulking and intimidating, Drones are more brutal and aggressive, and series annoyances like Reavers and Wretches look to have more tricks up their sleeves for Bravo Squad to deal with.

There’s new Locust creatures like a giant frog-looking thing that spits an acidic goo. To be honest, it looks kind of cute, but no doubt it will contribute to many problems in-game.

Violent Means, Violent Ends

Fear not, though – the new gore and dismemberment systems will ensure dispensing of any and all Locust is satisfying. Gore is now localized, able to show damage where and when shots land on enemies. Limbs are ripped smooth off if damage demands it. E-Day seems to be doubling down on the violence of the Gears series, and it looks as visceral as possible without being overly ridiculous.

The ways you’ll inflict violence have been expanded, too. This presentation revealed a new “Gut Puncher” grenade launcher that fans of the Boomshot will want to try out. You can have the munitions explode on their own or remotely detonate them yourself when you want. We even get a new shotgun called the Incinerator. It’s basically the Gears version of a dragon’s breath shotgun round, using flammable Imulsion to burn your opponents. It also has a sick axe blade along its stock that should make melee attacks satisfying. It’ll be hard to replace the iconic Gnasher shotgun, but the Incinerator might have what it takes.

Speaking of iconic, the classic chainsaw Lancer will see its origin story told during E-Day. You’ll also use favorites like the ridiculously huge bayonet-sporting Retro Lancer and Snub Pistol.

Never Fight Alone

Two-player couch co-op and four-player online co-op are confirmed at launch for E-Day! Versus mode will be a back-to-basics 4v4 ordeal with a host of game-types and symmetrical maps that still leverage all the new traversal and movement options E-Day brings with it. The Coalition is planning seasonal roadmaps like so many other multiplayer games house nowadays. They promise that “almost all” of the content on offer can be obtained simply by playing the game.

Of course, E-Day has to mix up the formula a bit. Horde Seige is a new 12-player PvE mode where three squads of four battle Locust on a scale never seen before in a Horde mode. More details will come soon and open betas will be available later in summer!

Gears of War: E-Day is shaping up to be a triumphant return to the series. We know how Marcus and Dom’s story together ends; now we see how it begins. It’ll release as a console exclusive for Xbox Series X|S on October 6, 2026, and on PC as well. You will be able to play it on Xbox Game Pass day one on either platform. A multiplayer beta will take place starting in August 2026, with early access available on August 6 for those who pre-order.
