Women Led Titles in Marvel

2023 is starting off beautifully with so many women-led titles coming from Marvel and DC. Here are some past women-led titles of Marvel that need the spotlight.

Women-led Titles of Marvel

Let’s start with Storm and the Brotherhood of Mutants. This series is part of the Sins of Sinister series and jumps right in with the action. The first issue is high in tension and leaves us with a seemingly dead Storm, but as we know, no one stays dead in the Marvel universe.

In a fun addition, we have Mary Jane and Black Cat. In this run, we have a team up. Mary Jane has ended up with some superpowers that she has very little control of and that no one seems to know about. She and Black Cat end up teaming up and try to navigate Mary Jane’s new powers and the massive elephant in the room between them: Are they both still in love with Peter? Now, that part of it is very written by a man. The women get dragged to hell and have to deal with Belasco but they’re still worried about boy problems? Sorry, no. As women-led titles go, it should have more women involved. Other then that, it’s a great story and a wonderful team up.

Next up is the Women of Marvel. Normally when Marvel goes out of their way to group women characters together, it ends up more sexist than intended. Nearly every “girl group” that Marvel has come up with is more problematic than helpful, either in story or in physical depiction. The Women of Marvel comic didn’t just feature the superpowered women of Marvel. It was also entirely written by women of Marvel. Featuring Black Cat, Scarlet Witch, Shanna the She-Devil, and more, each woman gets her own story. Taking inspiration and power sets from existing comics and telling stories all young women can relate to, this actually ended up being one of my favorite women-led titles.

Marvel has some incredible women, and we are glad that more of them are taking front and center.
