Women of Marvel | New Comics Review

January brings new titles for the women of Marvel, and we are here to bring the news about the new titles, both good and bad. We have a new title for Monica Rambeau in Photon, one for Wanda in the new ongoing Scarlet Witch series, and one for our only female founding Avenger, Janet Van Dyne in Wasp.

Women of Marvel Comics Review

Although most of these titles are limited series, we are also hopeful that this paves the way for more female titles in the future. Here is a preliminary review of the newer female lead comics from Marvel.

Photon

Let’s start with the first release, Photon. Technically, it started its release in 2022, but the rest of the series will take place in 2023. Monica Rambeau is more than deserving of her own title, and it’s finally here. The first issue was a wonderful acknowledgment of her past with the Avengers as well as an optimistic look toward her future. It would be great to see a storyline that will set up either something ongoing for her or set up a bigger role for her in a group title. It seems that the series is going to be set around The Beyonder, messing with Monica and the rest of the Avengers. Monica is losing time and reality starting in the second issue, and that is causing a disconnect between her and the Avengers.

Wasp

The Wasp series is long overdue. Janet was really one of the first ladies of Marvel, but it kicked off with a bang. The relationship between Janet and Nadia is amazing. The relationship with the main villain for the entire mini-series is set up very early. This story didn’t shy away from the past. Hank Pym was a bad husband and person, and the MCU has done away with that fact. Some comics try to gloss over it, but Wasp seems to be very honest about their relationship. These two women of Marvel are going to have an amazing mother-daughter storyline, and we can’t wait to see it play out.

Scarlet Witch

The Scarlet Witch series is about redemption and Wanda accepting herself and her past in order to make a better future, not just for herself, but for everyone around her. She has opened a magic store, the Emporium, that helps people with their everyday needs. In the store, she has also created a magic door that seeks people who need help with bigger problems and brings them to her. This door brings her Vision’s daughter, Vivian. Really what the first two issues of this new series do is show off Wanda’s powers. More than that, it shows that she doesn’t have to be “unstable” to be one of the most powerful women of Marvel.

The first two issues have her facing off against villains that have similar powers and kind of represent the worst parts of Wanda. It is a beautiful way to show that she has grown and is stronger when she is hopeful. We even have a guest appearance from Storm at the end of the second issue

Overall, we are thrilled with where these storylines are going. And are happy that the women of Marvel are getting the spotlight and the depth they deserve.
