What is Gallifrey One and Why Is It So Special?

About This Episode:

On this episode of the Temple of Geek Podcast, our host Monica talks with Lady of Time Cosplay and Doc In The Box about the Doctor Who convention known as Gallifrey One.

Gallifrey One is the world’s largest and longest-running annual Doctor Who fan convention. A fully non-profit event founded in 1989 by active fans in local Los Angeles science fiction fandom, Gallifrey One Conventions has run events annually since 1990.

We discuss what it is that makes Gallifrey One such a unique and special place, how it compares and differs from other conventions.

Lady of Time Cosplay shares with us her experience as a contestant in the Masquerade at Gallifrey One and talks to us about her inspiration for her 2019 entry, a Doctor Who and Disney’s Frozen mashup.

Cosplayer Doc In The Box talks with us about the camaraderie and community at Gallifrey One and what makes it special.  We also discuss celebrity interactions, fan-run panels, cosplay, travel tips, how there is something for every type of Whovian and much much more.

For more information on Gallifrey One, you can visit their website at http://www.gallifreyone.com/ or find them on social media on Twitter or on Facebook.

Taking place every February over Presidents’ Day Weekend at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel, the next annual convention, The 31 Flavours of Gallifrey One, will take place February 14-16, 2020. Tickets for the 2020 convention go on sale Saturday, April 13, 2019, at 12:00 pm Pacific Time (3:00 pm Eastern Time, or 8:00 pm UK/London time).  Tickets for 2020 are $110 for adults, $60 for teens (age 12-16) and $30 for children (ages 3-11); children under 3 are always free.

Last year, @j_caito told me he doesn’t consider #gallifreyone a convention. It’s more like a retreat. It really is. A big party all weekend to celebrate a show we’ve all enjoyed. Getting together with friends was the best, especially Friday night. I finally saw @idiots_lantern I had a great time sitting with @the_tentative_doctor then heading up to hang out with @its.cosplay.k @ninaofasgard @thisdorkynerdgirl @badmoosecosplay @macgoyver @bancroffed @jpthrice @zebraangelcosplay @katekenobi @tezrian89 @benlividcosplay I’ll be honest, I’m usually in bed early and I didn’t get home until 2 because I was having too much fun. #gallifreyone #donnanoblecosplay #doctorwho #doctorwhocosplay #gally1
