After Nintendo revealed the all-star voice cast during last September’s Direct, the Super Mario Bros. Trailer has finally been released. Check it out below.
The first teaser trailer for the Nintendo and Illumination collaboration was shown today as a special Nintendo Direct focusing on the film and for fans attending New York Comic Con. In the Direct, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO and founder Chris Meledandri, who also serves as producer for this film, introduce part of the voice cast, Chris Pratt and Jack Black.
We get our first introduction to Bowser (Jack Black) and his horde of minions attempting to take over a very Mario-like ice world. Fans of the games are all too familiar with the popular villain’s menacing stature and powers, and the trailer really does the character justice. We also see and hear Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), whose interpretation of the character’s trademark excruciating screeching voice is spot on. Finally, Mario takes center stage and we finally get to hear Chris Pratt’s Mario. It was assumed that the actor would forego original Mario voice actor Charles Martinet’s iconic high pitch grunts, quips, and “yahoos!”, but the trailer gave such little in the way of the voice that it’s hard to tell just how inspired by Martinet’s performance Pratt’s will be.
The internet is abuzz with memes and takes on this movie, its cast, and its animation style, but personally, I am cautiously optimistic. I do not think this trailer gives us enough quite yet for me to form a solid impression, but I will be going into this with tempered expectations when the Super Mario Bros. Movie release in theaters April 7th, 2023.
