In a recent interview with journalist Nick Williams, Director Elliott Lester shared insights into the inspiration, challenges, and hopes he has for his new film “The Thicket.”
When fierce bounty hunter Reginald Jones (Peter Dinklage) is recruited by a desperate man, he immediately assembles a band of unlikely heroes to track down the ruthless killer known only as Cutthroat Bill (Juliette Lewis). A grave-digging ex-slave and a street-smart woman-for-hire readily join his cause. Together, they embark on a perilous quest to hunt Cutthroat Bill, a journey that ultimately leads them into the deadly “no-man’s-land” known as…The Thicket.
In essence, THE THICKET is a film about vengeance, justice, and unlikely companionship. The film also stars Esmé Creed-Miles, Levon Hawke, Macon Blair, Andrew Schulz, James Hetfield, David Midthunder, with Arliss Howard, with Leslie Grace, and Gbenga Akinnagbe.
A Promise to His Father
Lester revealed that the seed for the movie was planted by a deeply personal promise. His father, who passed away in his arms, urged Lester to make “The Thicket” just a week before his death. “I had an obligation, and I was very happy to fulfill that obligation for him,” Lester shared, highlighting the emotional weight this project carries.
Lester’s personal loss infused the film with a profound sense of family and connection. “It’s really a film about connection and the importance of parents and having a home,” Lester explained. He aimed to weave this emotional core into a gritty narrative, creating a story that resonates on multiple levels.
Working with an “Amazing Cast” and Surviving the Canadian Cold
Lester couldn’t contain his excitement when talking about the film’s ensemble cast. “It was mind-blowing,” he exclaimed. Working alongside actors like Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis was a dream come true for the director. The experience went beyond just working with talented individuals, evolving into a unique bond forged amidst the challenging filming conditions in Canada.
Filming in Canada presented its own set of hurdles. Lester humorously acknowledged the “brutal” cold they faced. Temperatures plummeted to -35 degrees, with wind chills making it feel even colder. The extreme weather forced the crew to shut down on some days, highlighting the dedication of the cast and crew.
Hopes for the Audience
Above all, Lester wants “The Thicket” to offer audiences a respite from the world’s noise. He hopes viewers will experience 100 minutes of pure entertainment, disconnecting from their daily lives and immersing themselves in the film’s story. “The Thicket” is a film born from a promise, fueled by a personal connection, and forged amidst challenging conditions.
