Fans of the sci-fi cult classic, Babylon 5, were shown an exclusive screening of the newest installment of the series at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). Babylon 5: The Road Home is an animated film that takes place where season 5 left off. We spoke with Director Matt Peters about Babylon 5: The Road Home.

Interview with Matt Peters – Director of Babylon 5: The Road Home

Matt Peters is the director for the upcoming Warner Bros. Entertainment animated film, Babylon 5: The Road Home. Babylon 5 is a science fiction series created by J Michael Straczynski that ran from 1993-1998. There were five seasons, and each season represented one year’s worth of time within the series. Now, almost thirty years later, fans get to experience Babylon 5 on the screens once again.

We asked Matt Peters if he was a fan of the show before he took on the project. He said:

“I did not watch the show. And what happened was, is I was working with my executive producer, Rick Morales who worked on this film, and I was set to direct another movie with him. And he ended up getting Babylon 5, and so he immediately thought of me because he knew I liked sci-fi. He knew I liked good TV, and he asked me if I wanted to do it.”

Matt went on to say, “After watching a couple episodes, I said, ‘Put me on! I want to do this. So, I gave up another job just to work on this thing.”

Also, the creators wanted to properly translate the characters from live action to animation. Matt Peters explains that they paid attention to small details that fans would notice:

“We noticed that Bruce Boxleitner is left handed. So, he had his communicator on the other hand. And that was something that we tracked through the movie to make sure that that, you know, shows up. […] When I saw it, I immediately flagged it, and I mentioned it to Rick. And I thought, honestly, I thought it would be something that we wouldn’t pay attention to because, just for budget reasons. I thought it would be easier to skate passed it, and he said, ‘Absolutely not.'”

Fans can watch Babylon 5: The Road Home on Digital, 4K UHD and Blu-ray on August 15, 2023. Also, the Complete Series will be available on Blu-Ray on December 5th.
