Disney has just released their trailer for Cruella. Academy Award winner Emma Stone stars as iconic, fashionable, and notorious Cruella De Vil. This film takes a back-story look at how Cruella came to be the villain we all know and (love to) hate. It takes place in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution. We follow a young Estella. She’s a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her design. The film will be releasing May 28, 2021.

In 1996, Glen Close played the part in the live action film of 101 Dalmatians. Close did a phenomenal job as the puppy-seeking fashion icon villain. The original film 101 Dalmatians was an animated movie that was released in the 1960s. Now, Emma Stone steps into the role and feels like the perfect casting choice.

Instantly, the trailer sets the stage for a dark, exciting story. The narrating by Emma Stone in character is spine-chillingly brilliant as Estella talks about being “born brilliant.” Disney’s spin on classic villains, such as Maleficent, has always drawn us in to craving their back-story. How did they become the mad, unapologetically cruel people? Did they wake up one day and just decide to be against the world? Cruella will not paint Ms. de Vil as a “good guy,” but getting to know her looks quite exciting. “I am woman, hear me roar.”

Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman. Hellman, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”), is a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. However, their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the crazy, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
