Dungeon Masters Star Jasmine Bhullar On Exploring Horror In Ravenloft

“Dungeon Masters” is Dungeons & Dragons creator Wizards of the Coast’s new actual play launching April 22. The series incorporates unreleased official Wizards of the Coast content, including elements from “Ravenloft: The Horrors Within,” which will be released on June 16. “Dungeon Masters” is perfect for fans of every level from veteran players to newcomers curious about how to start.

The cast includes Devora Wilde (“Baldur’s Gate III”), Neil Newbon (“Baldur’s Gate III“), Christian Navarro (“13 Reasons Why,” “Critical Role“), and Mayanna Berrin (“Dispatch,” “The Dungeon Run”) with Jasmine Bhullar (“DesiQuest,” “Dimension 20“) serving as Dungeon Master. During a Q&A for “Dungeon Masters” Bhular shared her excitement about playing in the Ravenloft setting.

“I think I shrieked like a banshee. I was like, “RAVENLOFT!” I was super-duper excited… It’s fun to sink into the horror of it, and Ravenloft and the Domains of Dread is probably one of my favorite settings.”

In an exclusive interview with Temple of Geek, Jasmine Bhullar discusses her love of horror. She shares what speaks to her about the horror genre and her experience with horror in TTRPGs. Bhullar also teases what fans can expect from this campaign, including the “beautifully flawed characters” crafted by the players.

Jasmine Bhular Teases Horror In “Dungeon Masters” Ravenloft Campaign

Jasmine Bhullar:

“I think our character flaws begin to show, like the cracks begin to show under the pressure that is horror. It’s one of my favorite things with films and books across the genre. I think where fantasy and other genres show us the best parts of ourselves, I feel like horror sometimes shows the weakest parts of ourselves. And that can be cathartic. I’ve played Vampire: The Masquerade and all of these games for so long, and I love doing horror in Dungeons & Dragons too.

So I was excited to take the party to Ravenloft, and literally in the very first episode when Dev was like, “I thought D&D was supposed to be fun. “I was like, “D&D isn’t fun. You cry in D&D!” That was like completely, it was just a natural way of me being like, “Welcome to Ravenloft; this is what it’s gonna be!”

And I was so blessed because the players brought such beautifully flawed characters without me telling them what was gonna happen. And then it was my great pleasure to apply just enough pressure so we start to see the cracks between them and within them. I was really excited for it, and it pays off. Without spoilers, it really pays off.

Horror as a genre often challenges expectations both from the audience and the storytellers. Horror explores humanity through different lenses, often digging into vulnerabilities and deep-rooted fears. Bhullar’s understanding of the genre, both as a fan and creator, is pivotal to how the campaign will play out. Her excitement in how she can push buttons and apply pressure to the players through their characters bodes well for “Dungeon Masters.”

With Ravenloft being one of Bhullar’s favorite settings, she will likely dig into not only fan-favorite elements but potentially some of the more obscure possibilities as well. Bhullar is also the perfect Dungeon Master to incorporate new elements from the yet-to-be-released “Ravenloft: The Horrors Within.” Ravenloft is the perfect setting for this table, opening the door to a multitude of stories and emotions, from comedy to drama and beyond.
