Fan Reactions to the MCU announcements at D23 Expo

It was a big weekend for Disney fans. D23 Expo dropped lots of confirmations and announcements for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and, of course, their other properties. The best gauge of excitement was best calculated by the reactions from Twitter and Tik Tok. Check out some of the fan reactions to the MCU announcements at D23 Expo.

D23 Expo is known as the ultimate Disney Fan Event and took place September 9, 10, and 11 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Internet Reactions to MCU Announcements

The first major announcement was the exact lineup of the Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts. Yelena seemingly leading the team is no surprise but what might have been was the addition of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Though comic book accurate in the context of the MCU it doesn’t really make sense. Last we left him Bucky was fighting side by side with Sam, our new Captain America. He had turned a corner and was definitely not the Winter Soldier anymore. So why would he be front and center for a team of antiheroes?

The biggest gripe from fans is that the MCU is going to send Bucky’s character down a backslide. He has had so much character development and growth, that to see him be “bad” in any sense again will be a disservice to the character. The other problem the internet seemed to have was with John Walker (Wyatt Russell). Now we all knew he was going to be in Thunderbolts but the problem seems to come with him and Bucky being on the same team. Yes, John flipped a switch at the end of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but that doesn’t exactly count as redemption. Walker ran around crapping all over Steve’s legacy, fans don’t exactly see Bucky being a team player on a team with John.

The vague plot of The Marvels was revealed! Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) will all be switching powers in interesting and inconvenient ways and must work together to find a solution. Fans are divided on this one (as they are on everything). One side of the internet is happy that these heroes are going to get introduced to each other in a way that seems light and fun. The other side hates happiness and doesn’t think comedy belongs in the MCU. The tone of the film seems to fit all three personalities and most fans can’t wait until it finally hits the big screen.

Next up is a second season that no one really asked for, Loki. As MCU shows go Loki was probably the least well received by fans. This was largely due to the writing, and they have fixed that problem by hiring a new screenwriter for the series. So it is definitely possible that season 2 will be better, they have already started filming and the new season will be released in 2023.

Also announced was Armor Wars. Rhody fans will get to see Iron Patriot headline his own show. Going from sidekick to star, fans will see Rhodey suit up in different looks of Armor as he takes center stage.

Fans are both excited and disappointed in this next confirmation; Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again will be a new chapter for Matt Murdock. A lot of fans are let down that the show will be a whole new experience.

Some would like the show to pick up where the last one left off, with all the same characters. Considering the change in production that request simply isn’t reasonable, we are lucky that we got Charlie Cox to reprise the role.

Other MCU Announcements

And last but not least we have a director for the Fantastic Four! This project has been a point of contention for the fandom for quite a while now. Fans just want a good Fantastic Four movie, the last one was more than disappointing and the older ones had brilliant casting but suffered from cheesy writing. Matt Shakman who directed all of WandaVision has been tapped for this monumental project, allowing ease to settle over the MCU fans.

MCU fans also received announcements and actor appearances from the productions of Ironheart, Secret Invasion, and Echo. The rest of the 2020s is going to be huge for MCU fans and we can’t wait!
