Independent Comics to Read

The big two comic book titans, Marvel and DC, have many incredible characters and amazing stories to lose yourself in. There are so many wonderful stories that are created by independent comic book writers and publishers. These can be harder to find because they simply don’t get enough promotion or reach the right audience. Here are some publishers that have recently released newly innovative titles.

Independent Comic Recommendations

First up is The Sea in You by Jessi Sheron, from Iron Circus Comics. This graphic novel was released on March 14th and tells the story of escaping a toxic relationship, standing up for oneself, and becoming confident in one’s identity. An LGBTQ+ friendly book, the characters of Corinth and Skylla give each other strength and the power to overcome their situations. Featuring beautiful artwork, Jessi really pulls at your heartstrings with a fantastic, modern retelling of The Little Mermaid. The story is teenage friendly, but is really good for anyone that has ever had a difficult time with who they are. Iron Circus is a wonderful independent comic publisher.

Titan Comics will also be releasing its first issue of Moriarty: Clockwork Empire. Titan might be a little less independent then the others, but Fred Duval and Jean-Pierre Pecau deliver this story to audiences in March. Taking place in 1899 in a steampunk setting, the story centers around Sherlock, Watson, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Lady Li Mei. It is told in true Sherlock fashion with wit and great storytelling. The steampunk element adds an excellent twist to how Sherlock normally works.

We can also look forward to a new story from Legendary Comics, Sleep Terrors. Sleep Terrors is written by Cavan Scott and was successfully crowdfunded in September of last year. A true horror comic, this story is inspired by the work of Stephen King and depicts the dangers of falling asleep.

There are some amazing stories outside of Marvel and DC, and it is important to support independent comic publishers.
