She-Hulk: History and What Comics to Read

She-Hulk is finally being released on Disney+ on August 18th. The show is a remarkably accurate comic book adaptation. So it’s important that we direct you to Jen Walters’ most amazing comics book runs, and discuss a little of her history.

She-Hulk Backstory

Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, the character was introduced on Feb. 10, 1980, in “The Savage She-Hulk” comic series. She-Hulk went on to become a member of the Avengers in 1982.

Jennifer Walters a.k.a She-Hulk jumped into major events almost immediately after her transformation. She joined the Avengers and had a decent-sized role in the Secret Wars storyline. After that, in 1984, she joined the Fantastic Four as a replacement for The Thing who was depowered during Secret Wars. It was during this time that she was given her first love interest, Wyatt Wingfoot. Her first major run ended with a radiation event that prevented her from ever changing back into her human form. Though it was already established that she preferred her She-Hulk form.

After her time with the Fantastic Four, Jen rejoined the Avengers. This span of the comics is when she gets to interact with lots of other heroes and characters. Spider-man helps her defeat Ringmaster, she meets Louise Grant Mason who was at one time The Blonde Phantom, and battles Doctor Bong.

The Savage She-Hulk (1980)

I like to start at the top, so for her first introduction, The Savage She-Hulk is a good place to start. This run gives us a little bit of a grittier backstory, and a very interesting case involving Morbius. It’s also the run that kicks off involving her in major comic book events.

The Sensational She-Hulk (1989)

Now, this is objectively the best run of She-Hulk. It’s meta, it’s the first time she breaks the fourth wall (making her the first Marvel character to do so), and this is the run that truly informs who Jennifer is as a character. This is her best characterization and by far the best writing for her.

Avengers: Search for She-Hulk (1998)

Jennifer is a very underrated member of the Avengers so for her to have her own focused storyline in an Avengers title is incredibly important. Afraid that a loss of control could hurt her friends, Jennifer runs away, leaving the Avengers to try and find her and bring her back to the team.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

In Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Emmy® Award-winning actress Tatiana Maslany stars as Jennifer Walters—an attorney specializing in superhuman-oriented legal cases. She leads the complicated life of a single, 30-something who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk. Jennifer Walters is one of the all-time best female comic book characters, so check out She-Hulk on Disney+ and then check out some of these really awesome comic book runs.
