Forget the princess diaries and the billionaire romances. Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson are trading heartwarming tropes for a descent into madness. Amazon MGM Studios has officially pulled back the curtain on the teaser trailer for Michael Showalter’s adaptation of the Colleen Hoover phenomenon, Verity. And it is far more haunting than anyone anticipated.
While Hathaway and Johnson are staples of the rom-com and prestige drama circuits, this first look feels less like a more like a horror film than a phychological thriller. It’s slick, it’s seductive, and it’s deeply unsettling.
The Power of the Unknown
Perhaps the most striking thing about the teaser is its restraint. The trailer offers very few concrete plot details, relying instead on a mounting sense of dread and high-tension imagery to keep the audience on their toes. While fans of the book know the twisted road ahead, and the official synopsis provides the framework, the footage itself plays like a fever dream. It forces viewers to piece together the mystery through fractured glimpses of the a creepy estate, leaving everyone wondering exactly what is real and what is a nightmare.
A Ghostwriter in a House of Secrets
The story follows Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who lands the opportunity of a lifetime: finishing the remaining books in a successful series by the renowned Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway). After a catastrophic accident leaves Verity unable to work, Lowen moves into the isolated Crawford estate to sort through the author’s notes.

What she finds, however, isn’t just a roadmap for a sequel. It’s a chilling, handwritten autobiography filled with bone-chilling confessions about Verity’s husband, Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), and the dark history of their family. Verity arrives Only in Theaters October 2, 2026.
