So this is it, this is the final day of the experiment and this is where we finally learn the fate of humanity. Before all that though, we start with a very passionate Eleanor (the love of my life) begging to be reunited with the love of HER life, Chidi. He’s still frozen, waiting for his memories to be returned to him. Snappy- snappy memory fix-y, am I right?
The gang starts discussing the potential of having to die again. Janet joins in and offers to tell them what their funerals on earth had actually been like. Eleanor talks about how in Arizona you can have your body placed in a shooting range and get credit for it, now I’m not American, but that’s the most American thing I have ever heard in my life. Tahani suggests they have funerals for each other to pass the time waiting for the Judge’s ruling on humanity. During this time in the Judge’s chambers, Shawn and Michael then have an insult off which came across slightly homo-erotic, and honestly, I’m down for that. Shmichael forever.
Tahani’s “funeral” takes place in a private jet. Because that is where she felt the most comfortable. Maybe that’s another reason she ended up in The Bad Place. Private jets are very bad for the environment. With this and Chidi’s almond milk, I am going to single highhandedly blame the soul squad for the actual Earth dying. THANKS, GUYS. The gang said a lot of adorable things about Tahani and why they love her. Which was wholesome as heck.
We learn at Jason’s funeral that his mum died of cancer which is very sad. Poor little Jason. Janet describes him like a hot action figure but real. This is a very fair description, he is basically a ken doll but with beautiful cheekbones.
While the gang is busy passing time over at the Judge’s quarters both The Good Place and Bad Place staff are present. The results reveal that all the candidates apart from Brent improved while in The Good Place. Michael tries to convince the judge that despite Brent going down by 1%, the experiment still proved a point. He also pointed out that based on this current system of the six main characters from the cast of Friends, only Phoebe would make it into The Good Place, which is hilarious.
Michael also points out the people that our favorite cockroaches(Elanore, Tahini, Jason and Chidi) helped on earth. Tahani’s sister, Kamilah Jamil, started a scholarship in Tahani’s name to send women to university. Pill Boy, Jason’s friend, dedicated his life to helping the elderly. Donna Shellstrop, Elanore’s mother, finally started to become a good mother to her stepdaughter. They did this because of the help they received from the before the experiment reboot. This proved that people improve when they get love and support, even Brent. In the last few seconds of the experiment, Brent got way better when Chidi was open to him about his behavior. No one is beyond rehabilitation. Also, I’m crying.
Finally, Eleanor’s funeral takes place at “a bar she wasn’t invited to”. Tahani made a beautiful speech about her and Jason made a very, uhhh… interesting song about her. Give him the grammy, its what he deserves.
Anyway, the judge comes to the conclusion that MICHAEL IS RIGHT. THEY FREAKING WON. However….. the judge decided that she’s going to just reboot the Earth and all life on it. Starting everything from scratch, from literal germs or whatever humans started out as. The judge gets out her human eraser thingy, but just when she goes to press it, Janet beeps it into her void. What. A. Badass. HOWEVER AGAIN, IT WASN’T OUR GOOD JANET. IT WAS BAD JANET. She read Michael’s manifesto and is now on Team Cockroach. She sent the manifesto to EVERY JANET. INCLUDING DISCO JANET. THEY ALL TEAM UP TO SAVE THE EARTH. AND I DIED. This episode is the most iconic thing to ever happen I’m just saying. The judge tries to check every Janet’s void for the remote. Yikes on a bike.
Eleanor convinces Michael to restore Chidi’s memories, he is truly the only one that can save them. As Eleanor said, creating a fair afterlife is the biggest ethical question there is, he was born for this job!
This episode was flawless and I can’t forget to mention this. THIS EPISODE WAS DIRECTED BY KRISTEN BELL. As the world’s biggest Kristen Bell fan, this makes me love the episode even more. Kristen did SUCH an incredible job. I really hope she directs more stuff in the future because clearly she’s super good at it. To sum up, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I am so excited to share my thoughts on the next episode where Chidi finally remembers Eleanor!
