The Walking Dead: Dead City (Original Television Series Soundtrack) was released today, June 23, by Milan Records. The album features 20 tracks of dark and industrial music composed by Ian Hultquist. The series is a spin-off of the popular series The Walking Dead and centers around Maggie and Negan’s travel into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland.

The Walking Dead: Dead City (Original Television Series Soundtrack)

The music was created by sampling organic and environmental sounds, such as banging on pipes, vibrating grain silos, and playing instruments such as brass and guitar. These sounds were then repitched, looped, and reverberated in the studio. The album is available now on digital platforms and the series is available now on AMC and AMC+.

Composer Ian Hultquist

Ian Hultquist is an American composer and producer who has made a name for himself composing scores for films, documentaries, and TV shows. Hultquist started his career as a founding member of the band Passion Pit and later worked as a music director and remixer. Back in 2014, he relocated to Los Angeles to focus on film scoring and has since worked on over 40 films and 20 TV shows.

“[I had] a few friends design samples & sounds specifically for the show. They helped create a lot of the booms & percussion, and the drones in [episode 5]. My assistant Ben Van is an avid field recordist and spent his holiday break in Maine recording sounds in abandoned warehouses. They literally look like Dead City sets,” says Ian.
His work has been featured in films by Sam Levinson, Erin Lee Carr, Alena Smith, and Karen Maine. In 2016, he founded Little Twig Records, a label focused on releasing soundtracks for film and TV. In 2020, he was named one of Doc NYC’s 40 Under 40.
