Vox Machina’s story continues with the recent renewal of The Legend of Vox Machina for a fourth season. The third season concluded with the heroes banding together to save one of their own from the demons in his past and defeat the remaining dragons of the Chroma Conclave. The series is adapting Critical Role’s first campaign bringing the iconic villains of their epic journey to life in animation.
The first season of the series followed the heroes as they helped Percy save White Stone from the Briarwoods. These villains wiped out Percy’s family and took control of White Stone, but they had other motivations as well. Delilah Briarwood made a pact with a powerful mysterious being to save her beloved husband, but the season ended with questions surrounding the dangerous black orb in the ziggurat when her quest failed.
The second and third season of The Legend of Vox Machina followed the heroes as they worked with allies to fight off the deadly Chroma Conclave after they decimated cities across Exandria. However, questions about the orb and the Briarwoods’ pact remained. Perhaps the most intriguing clue was introduced with Zerxus Ilerez.
Could Zerxus Ilerez Play A Role In The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4?
Zerxus was created by Luis Carazo who played the character in Critical Role’s EXU: Calamity miniseries. He reprised the role in The Legend of Vox Machina, showing who Zerxus became in the thousand years between the Calamity and Vox Machina’s time. In a recent interview with Temple of Geek Carazo addressed the possible ties between Zerxus and the Whispered One which fans caught onto in the character’s final moment of episode 5:
Luis Carazo: I think that’s kind of as far as I was able to go is, Ah, yeah, interesting. In my mind, I’m already starting to imagine different possibilities so that if ever the time comes and I need to step into one trajectory or another, I’ve already started to kind of plant the seeds for whatever that road might be. But it was definitely intriguing, very curious to see what might be on the other side of that.
In the final moments of The Legend of Vox Machina‘s season three finale a group of hooded individuals with bandages covering their bleeding eyes are chanting while kneeling in front of the orb. With a flash of purple lightning the figure of what seems to be the Whispered One, which briefly appeared to Delilah Briarwood in the first season, appears. It seems the fourth season may finally shed some light on this mystery.
While Vox Machina was working to save Exandria from the Chroma Conclave, it seems a darker threat was lurking. With Vox Machina splitting apart to live their own lives a new global threat may be exactly what brings them back together. While the Whispered One was always a dangerous foe, the addition of Zerxus introduces a new aspect of this threat that could bring in exciting possibilities for fans of both the animated series and the original campaign.
