In the season three finale of “The Legend of Vox Machina,” the titular team of heroes split up in the wake of defeating the deadly dragons. While a new threat to the world will bring them back together, they have each had their own adventures in the time between. Keyleth and Vax in particular have had a story shaped by destiny, fate, and expectations from the beginning.
Keyleth has been tasked with completing her Aramenté in order to take over as the leader of her people. This not only comes with the weight of leadership and destiny but also the legacy of her mother, who died attempting to complete this mission. Vax’s fate is intertwined with the Goddess of death, The Matron of Ravens, after making a deal to save his sister. The fourth season will see their struggle with these larger-than-life concepts once again as they face the threat of the Whispered One.
In an exclusive interview with Temple of Geek, Marisha Ray and Liam O’Brien discussed Keyleth’s and Vax’s journeys this season. Ray teases Keyleth coming into her own and her struggle not with power or destiny, but with herself. O’Brien explained how Vax is attempting to do right by everyone he feels a responsibility towards.
Keyleth Is Carving Her Own Path In The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4

Temple of Geek: Marisha, one of the things that’s so cool about Keyleth is her stepping into this leadership role and position as she goes forth with her Aramente. While also grappling with the realities of what it could mean if she succeeds and completes it, not only with losing people in the future but also with the knowledge about her mom and that legacy. Can you talk to me a little bit about Keyleth’s journey in that struggle?
Marisha Ray:
Yeah, I mean, I think it’s like that quintessential struggle between the destiny that is forced upon you, whether it be expectation or even generational trauma, and really trying to carve out your own path and make your own decisions, despite the expectations that may weigh heavy on you. I think in a lot of ways, we’ve seen a lot of growth from Keyleth over the past several seasons, really coming into herself, coming into her power.
But I think in this moment, you’re not seeing some sort of struggle with power, you’re seeing that struggle with self and seeing her really overcome that. And then she gets to bark orders at people and be like a little battle matron later on. I think it’s really fun.
Throughout the first three seasons Keyleth has slowly found her own strength and power with the help of Vox Machina. She’s completed three of the four tests of the Aramenté to become the Voice of the Tempest. Two of these she passed in the midst of Vox Machina saving the world from the Chroma Conclave. Her confidence, leadership, and power have all grown in that time.
She is only one step away from completing the mission her mother failed, becoming a leader of all the Ashari. However, she has more to lose than ever with Vax. His deal with the Matron of Ravens and his ominous future in the wake of saving Percy. Which likely has him in the crosshairs of fate. It seems this season will see Keyleth grapple with her sense of self as she steps into a role bigger than herself with worldwide threats once again on the horizon.
Vax “Feels Like He Can’t Win”

Temple of Geek: Liam, Vax took a huge risk and potentially sacrifice in bringing Percy back at the end of last season, but we still see him have this great kind of reverence and loyalty towards The Matron. How is he balancing his loyalty with the fact that he will sometimes go against what she says is fate?
Liam O’Brien:
Well, he’s got a lot of people that he’s trying to do right by; The Matron, Keyleth, his sister once the group is all back together. I think he understands; while he cannot see the shape of his future or his destiny, he understands everything points to it being important and necessary. Not to mention his sister’s life being tied up in it all, that debt.
So, I feel like he often, in this season, feels like he can’t win. He’ll never be able to satisfy all sides, but he’s trying to do his best to deliver as best he can to all the people who have expectations or needs or wants from him in the season. Yeah, it’s a lonely, lonely road in the midst of the fame.
Ever since the second season of “The Legend of Vox Machina,” Vax has been pulled in multiple directions. His debt to the Matron of Ravens has been a guiding force in many ways dictating decisions he has made. However, he has defied her expectations, most notably in the season three finale when he rescues Percy’s soul. This struggle will continue in the fourth season.
However, it seems his fate will be more critical than ever. Balancing his loyalty and love for Keyleth and Vex with his debt and faith in the Matron of Ravens may come to a head. The threat of the Whispered One, which has been put in place since the first season, could be directly tied into the larger fate the Matron has hinted at as well. The question becomes, can he repay his debt while honoring the most important people in his life?
“The Legend of Vox Machina” returns for its fourth season on June 3 on Prime Video. The first three seasons are available to watch on Prime Video now.
