Invincible S2 Ep 5 “This Must Come as a Shock” Recap

Prime Video made us wait for the second half of the second season of Invincible, but it is finally here. In Season 2 Episode 5 “This Must Come as a Shock” The Grayson household is thrown into chaos when Mark returns to Earth with surprising new responsibilities.

Invincible Season 2 Episode 5 “This Must Come as a Shock” Recap

To recap, last we Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun) and his dad Omni Man/ Nolan Grayson( J.K. Simmons) started a new family, they got attacked by Viltrimites, an interdimensional villain that has declared war on our hero, the shadow-verse is something that he is going to have to contend with, and Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen) is dead, the Mars incident is going to have some consequences and the Lizard League is coming. The series did a great job of setting up things in the first four episodes of this season.

Walton Goggins (Cecil Stedman), Chris Diamantopoulos (Donald Ferguson)

Now we are back with the second half of season two and we are starting with a bang; Mark is finally ready to return home and is asked to do so with his new little half-brother. Mark fulfills his brotherly duties but in doing so sends his poor mother into a bit of a spiral. Understandably Debbie is hurt by Nolan starting another family, and his inability to take accountability. But she pushes her personal feelings aside and agrees to raise the kid so that Mark doesn’t have to drop out of school.

Cecil continues to deepen as a character, it is clear that he is extremely controlling and cold. But when Donald finds out that he is just a rebuilt version of himself in a bionic body Cecil isn’t painted in a good light.

Martians and Lizards

We also get to see the Martian thing come to a head. Shapesmith admits to being a Martian who disguised himself as an astronaut to come back to Earth.

Samantha is going through an existential crisis triggered by the feeling that no matter how much she tries to help, she just ends up making things worse. The fact that Rex is the one that kind of pulls her back shows some excellent character growth. The more we find out about Atom Eve the better the videogame centered around her gets. They did their best to keep the storylines as close as possible.

Melise (Dupli-Kate)

Rex invites another world-ending threat when the strongest of the guardians go off-world to handle the Martians when he says “like there’s going to be two world-ending threats at the same time, I’d like to see that” – and then of course the Lizard League attacks.

The giant brain guy overpowers the Guardians, while the Lizard League delivers a brutal blow. They kill Duplicate, sever Rex’s hand, and devour Shrinking Ray. But for some good news Allen the Alien is alive!

The second half of Season Two will consist of four episodes premiering weekly, starting Thursday, March 14 on Prime Video.
