Looking Forward to Avatar The Last Airbender

Aang and Zuko from ATLA

We got news at 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con that we were not done with the world of Avatar: the Last Airbender. Several movies have been announced taking us through the next few years. The first will center around the adult Gaang, set to release in 2025.

The grown up versions of our favorite group will be in their mid-20s and casting for their voices is already underway. We don’t know much more than that, but we do know that the producers, writers and directors have plenty of storylines to choose from. With many comics and graphic novels picking up where the series left off, stories with the Gaang already exist. So will the new movies simply animate an existing story or will they come up with something new for us? In the hands of the original creators, audiences are sure to be happy with whatever they come up with.

Additionally, Paramount is also rumored to be working on its own Avatar the Last Airbender projects, independent of the movies that were announced at Comic-Con. Supposedly these movies are going to center around Firelord Zuko, and Avatar Kyoshi.

In less exciting news, the live action version of Avatar: the Last Airbender from Netflix has wrapped filming as of February 2023. Excitement for this show has steadily declined after the release of casting and the exit of the animated shows original creators. The 8 hour series will be Netflix’s most expensive original project to date at $15 million an episode. We will theoretically see the first season of the live action adaptation sometime this year.

We also have a new animated series coming, following the next Avatar in the cycle after Korra, so we will have an earthbending Avatar to watch. All of the 90s and early 2000s kids are going to have plenty of nostalgia feelings in the next few years with an abundance of Avatar: the Last Airbender content.
