Magic Con Vegas 2026 - The Hobbit MTG Set Is Built for Adventure

Magic: The Gathering’s The Hobbit Set Brings Adventure

Magic: The Gathering is returning to Middle-earth with its upcoming The Hobbit set, and the focus is exactly where it should be: adventure.

At MagicCon Vegas 2026, there was a roundtable Q&A with members of the team behind the set, including Mike Turian, Nick Marcantel, and Annie Sardellis. The conversation offered an early look at how The Hobbit is being adapted into Magic. They also spoke about how it connects to The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, and what fans can expect when the set arrives.

One of the biggest takeaways was the team’s book-first approach. Rather than leaning heavily on the film adaptations, the set is primarily inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s original novel. That gives the cards room to capture the charm, danger, and whimsy of Bilbo’s journey with Gandalf and Thorin’s company.

The Adventure mechanic also feels like a natural fit. While The Lord of the Rings is more of an epic, The Hobbit is a classic quest story. The team discussed how that sense of movement, discovery, and danger helped shape the set’s design.

Smaug also appears to be one of the biggest highlights. Unlike Tales of Middle-earth, where the dragon could only be hinted at, The Hobbit allows Smaug to take center stage. The team also confirmed that this set will not include preconstructed Commander decks.
